Top songs of 2009

I used to think I listened to a broad range of music — but after working up a list of my favorite songs from 2009, either my preferred listening tastes are getting more defined — or perhaps 2009 just wasn’t a great year for new music. (Feel free to offer up your own theories.)

Ten spots filled by six different artists. It’s not as diverse as some, but it’s my list and what I’ve been enjoying this year.

Honorable mention:
Knights Of Cydonia – Muse :: this track came out in 2006, but I didn’t find it (or them really) until I saw them open for U2 in Houston. My Muse station has now become one of my favorite stations on Pandora and this track quickly became one of my favorite tracks. See the video on Hulu.

Interesting thoughts from Moby

Moby’s blog is always a fun read. You never know what you’ll find. Some stuff I agree with, some I disagree with (especially his gripes against Mike Huckabee :-))

Anyways, here’s some of his recent thoughts from SXSW in Austin re: an Oklahoma State Rep:

hi, i’m here in austin and enjoying the fact that it’s warm and i’m also checking the news and lo and behold i find this little gem:

AP – OKLAHOMA CITY – A Republican member of the Oklahoma Legislature, Rep. Sally Kern, stated recently that “the homosexual agenda is just destroying this nation” and poses a bigger threat to the U.S. than terrorism or Islam.

“According to God’s word that is not the right kind of lifestyle,” Rep. Sally Kern of Oklahoma City said during an appearance before a group of Republicans.

Kern says in the recorded comments. “It is not a lifestyle that is good for this nation.”

ok, where to begin…

how about this simple question: what did jesus(presumably sally kern’s god)say about homosexuality? let’s see…nothing? yup, nothing. dear sally kern: jesus never mentioned homosexuality. allow me to put it a different way, perhaps in question form…how many times did jesus mention homosexuality? oh(to be conversational), none? yup none. never. not once. zero. he did mention divorce(saying it was bad), and capitalism(ditto: bad), and judgementalism and intolerance(again: bad), and forgiveness(good). but homosexuality? never mentioned by jesus in the gospels. so why are the religious right in the u.s so utterly obsessed with homosexuality? and how is the homosexual agenda(whatever that might be)destroying the nation? i mean, if evangelicals call themselves christians shouldn’t they sort of base their evangelical agenda on the things that christ actually said?

The GOP in 2008

Moby has some interesting thoughts on the current Republican Party in America.
Granted he’s definitely not a Republican…

sitting in my hotel room in london and i just finished watching bush’s final
state of the union address.
eh. to be honest it was kind of a non-event.
no nutty comments about steroids or trips to mars.
no new members in the axis-of-e-vil.
he just seemed sort of out of touch and a bit lost and sort of
desperate in a ‘uh oh, i don’t want to leave
office with a 25% approval rating’ kind of way.
it got me thinking about the state of the republican right in 2008.
and how fractured it is.
to make a big sweeping generalization, there are 4 big components
to the republican right(let’s use simpsons examples)-
1-the flanderses(aka-cultural evangelical conservatives)
2-mr burns and kent brockman(rich guys who don’t like taxes)
3-cletus and brandene(ignorant hicks who believe that barack obama lives in baghdad with wmd’s)
4-grampa simpson(scared and angry people over 70)

Moby suggests that the “flanderses like mike huckabee, mr burns likes mitt romney, cletus and brandene don’t know who they like but they know they don’t like hillary cos she wants to kill christmas, and grampa simpson likes john mccain cos he’s over 70 and doesn’t take sass from the young people.”

Wonder which Simpson character is a fan of Ron Paul?

A fairly broad paint brush of the GOP but probably not too far off. Thoughts?

conservativism in 2007

Moby makes some great interesting points on his blog about the current state of the GOP and conservatives in 2007.
As I mentioned earlier, it seems like the “top runners” for the GOP nomination want to argue about who’s more conservative than the other. For some reason it brings to mind, “The first shall be last and the last shall be first.”
But either way, Moby asks, “What does it mean to be a conservative in 2007?” He gave his list and I want to share my thoughts (surprise surprise Rick Reynolds ;-))
I don’t know if my thoughts make me a conservative or not – I’d consider myself more of a moderate – but see what you think and share your thoughts.

FREE: Moby mix

Moby re-did a mix of his song Porcelain for a gig he had over the weekend and (for a limited time I’m sure) you can download the new mix on his myspace page. Just don’t tell the suits. They might get a little angry.
From Moby’s blog:

oh, before ‘degenerates’ on thursday i realized that i didn’t have any remixes of ‘porcelain’ that i wanted to play(although the extant remixes of ‘porcelain’ are good, they’re just not energetic enough for a big room set), so i quickly made a remix of ‘porcelain’ that worked well at ‘degenerates’.
i’ve posted it on myspace if you want to download it and play it when you dj.
hopefully the man won’t get upset with me for giving away music, but it’s
just a simple little remix.

In related news, I’ve been working on a new show/podcast for OrangeNoiseRadio. I’d love to have a mix of all sorts of stuff but it will probably start out with a mix of house/drum&bass/ambient music. The only downside is that for it to be a legal podcast, the music needs to be copywrite free or under a creative commons license. So it’s taking a little longer to find the music.

You’re voting for Giuliani

Moby comments on Giuliani’s presidential campaign – and like him, I’m really surprised Rudy Giuliani remains at the top of the GOP presidential candidates

in the 90’s he had a radio show wherein he spoke directly to new yorkers.
he had an ongoing battle with a guy named david, who was the head of the ferrets rights association.
this quote from giuliani makes me laugh out loud.

“david, your compulsion, your excessive concern for weasels is a sign of something wrong in your personality,”
-rudolph giuliani

elsewhere in his radio program he:
a-lambasted the nra
b-expressed support for hillary clinton’s health care program
c-bragged about how nyc gave free health care to illegal immigrants
and so on.
and he’s the republican front runner?
awesome.
i kind of want to support his bid for the presidency just because he’s insane and would be a really entertaining president.
ok, i don’t really want to support his bid for the presidency.
but he is insane and he would be really entertaining as president.
i really do love that the republican front runner is a cross-dresser who has publicly supported gay rights and has called for a ban on private gun ownership.
it’s kind of amazing that the republicans are supporting a guy who used to live with 2 gay men and was for most of his political career to the left of hillary clinton.
again, awesome.
