John Saddington is right

I’m finding more and more how horrible email is on my phone.

While I’ve turned off 99% of my phone’s notifications (including email), if I’m out and about I’ll still get that itch and want to pick up my phone and check-in with my social networks and email…

And unlike Twitter or text messaging which allows for super quick easy replies, emails tend to take far more time to respond to.

And let’s be honest, phone’s just aren’t made to send long email replies. Auto-correct and small keyboards turn me off when it comes to long replies. So while I can often filter out a lot of emails on my phone, I don’t want to reply at length until I get a chance to sit down at a computer again.

And in the meantime, the email is stuck in my head ad nauseam.

“I’ve got to reply!”

“How will I reply?”

“How quickly do I need to stop everything and reply?”

On and on it goes.

I’ve even run into this on my desktop –while thinking I’d just quickly check my email before heading out the door. I fly through a bunch of unimportant emails that quickly get deleted and then there’s one or two stragglers that scream for attention.

Surely John Saddington and I aren’t the only ones who feel (mobile) email is so disruptive.

Do you? Have you found a solution?

John’s gone so far as to remove email completely from his “smart phone.”

I’m not there yet – but don’t think I haven’t considered it.

45/365

I do my best to offer grace and understanding to folks — no matter where they are, what they’re doing or how they’re doing it.

But sometimes when it comes to communicating, certain things get under my skin. I’m not sure why, they just do. So I thought I’d offer a little insight into my world with a list of my Top 12 communication pet-peeves.

(I know some of these might feel like I’m picking on you. I’m not. Trust me, there are more than one person that does each of these — and several folks do multiples of these. Social media hacks for your website

Getting on a little bit of a technology bent lately…

There are tons of plugins you can get for your website or blog that allow your readers to share your posts on a number of social network sites. But my experience has been that often those plugins can cause havoc on your servers for one reason or another – or bog your site down in general.

But there are alternatives to using plugins — and these will work for WordPress site, or anywhere on any site that utilizes PHP.

Going dark

Croatia Internet - http://www.flickr.com/photos/notrealistic/3434937007/

It’s no secret that I enjoy being online and connecting with others.

But being on vacation last week — primarily in international waters — forced me to forgo my daily habits and go dark online for the extent of our trip.

I loved it! It was a nice change of pace for sure. Granted there were several time when I thought — ooh I should Twitter that — but the high price of phone service kept me in check.

Automatic e-mail responders

email route

Anyone else use an auto-responder at e-mails when they’re out of town?

Or are you so tied to e-mail that you check it regardless?

Personally I don’t ever check work related e-mail from home unless it’s an absolute emergency, but since I’m going to be out of town, I thought I’d set up an auto-responder with a twist for my work account.
