Ubertwitter does Twitter video!

Check this out!

(embedded video)

With their latest version, Ubertwitter now posts video directly to TwitVid – straight from my BlackBerry Curve 8900!

Greatness!

This video was 26 seconds long and I posted it over AT&Ts 2G (EDGE) network. It took roughly 20 minutes to upload – not too bad! I’ll have to take some more video and see what it does on a good Wi-Fi connection as well.

I’m sure this will open up some more fun on the mobile interwebs for sure.

The latest version does have ads in it (as I mention in the video) but they weren’t distracting and wouldn’t keep me from using the software.

However, as of this morning, Ubertwitter announced they would remove the ads from the application itself:

Ads Have Been Turned Off

We have been listening and have heard you loud and clear! We will not turn advertisements on again until we can offer a a paid option with no advertisements. The paid version will be less then $5 and will likely be a year long subscription model, i.e. all upgrades for a year. If you purchase during the beta period, the year won’t start until we release version 1.0. Thank you for your patience and your feedback!

With the small ad I saw, I’d be happy to keep using it for free, but because its such a great software app (IMHO) I’ll gladly pay a couple bucks for a full version once it’s released.

Five things I did during the Great Crash of 2009

So when I suggested earlier this week that perhaps we should all have a dark day from time to time I didn’t mean for Twitter to take it personallyespecially not during the work week.

Could have done without their servers (and Facebook and Friendfeed) crashing yesterday — but looks like we survived.

  • Found out about new blog posts via old fashioned RSS — instead of everyone’s Twitter updates
  • Forwarded emails with “RT @username” in the subject line
  • Posted a status update directly on Facebook for a change
  • Pasted a picture of the Fail Whale on my computer monitor hoping to cover up the dreaded 404 error messages
  • Sent txt messages to all my friends telling them “I’m eating quesadillas for #lunch”

What did you do during the social media crash of 2009?

Here’s what the folks over at Woot.com did… (and there list is far better than mine)

Going dark

It’s no secret that I enjoy being online and connecting with others.

But being on vacation last week — primarily in international waters — forced me to forgo my daily habits and go dark online for the extent of our trip.

I loved it! It was a nice change of pace for sure. Granted there were several time when I thought — ooh I should Twitter that — but the high price of phone service kept me in check.

Taking photos in public

Thomas has an interesting take on taking photos of folks in public over on the nanolog — and specifically taking photos of the homeless.

I have no idea who the chap is in the pic nor do I have any thought as to why he considered it acceptable to photograph the Soup Van and the queue of folks waiting to be served.

I actually was quite blatant about taking the photo… but either he didn’t notice or didn’t care.

I found his behaviour rude and… if I am honest… rather dangerous.

We do not take photographs as a rule because we don’t want to put a barrier between us and the folks we serve… some of which would prefer not to have their photo taken.

He was rude because he didn’t ask… and he took a chance because he would have met with some strong opposition if he’d been spotted.

In hindsight… whilst I appreciate what he’s trying to do… it still seems wrong to me and probably explains why I prefer to take pictures of buildings or people I know. People need a choice….

People deserve the common courtesy to be asked whether or not they wish to have their photo taken. Not an easy task considering the number of folks present.

Church 2.0 forum

In case you missed my Facebook, Twitter updates yesterday, I had the great privilege of taking part in Greg Atkinson’s Church 2.0 forum in Dallas.

It was a relaxed four-hour chat about technology, innovation and social justice. I loved that while there are a number of tech forums and conferences out there – Greg is doing this for the Church – for free. He’s keeping folks informed on the tools out there and helping people see how they can put them to use. And of course – these ideas work outside the Church as well.

Automatic e-mail responders

email route

Anyone else use an auto-responder at e-mails when they’re out of town?

Or are you so tied to e-mail that you check it regardless?

Personally I don’t ever check work related e-mail from home unless it’s an absolute emergency, but since I’m going to be out of town, I thought I’d set up an auto-responder with a twist for my work account.
