Libraries of tomorrow

A random thought/idea came to me today.

Last year Amazon began allowing loaning books between Kindle users. In addition they just announced (this week I believe) that libraries will now be able to purchase Kindle versions, for patrons to borrow and read on any Kindle enabled device.

(FREE software is available to read Kindle books on iPhone, iPad, Windows PC, Mac, Blackberry, Android and Windows Phone devices.)

You can loan a book to anyone with an e-mail address via the Kindle Manager (as long as the publisher has enabled lending).

So as I was thinking about how this might be an awesome avenue for sharing ideas and material with not just my friends next door, but my friends across the pond, I started thinking…

YouVersion

I’ve been using YouVersion for some time, both online and on my mobile devices (first two BlackBerry’s and now on my G1).

It’s amazing how powerful a platform YouVersion is. And there’s a number of cool things you can do with the platform, both online and on your mobile device — all for FREE.

10. View comments and contributions from more than 6 million readers around the world.
9. Follow along with one of 22 different Bible reading plans.
8. Replace that 17 pound Bible you’ve been lugging back and forth to church.
7. Bookmark passages for later reference.
6. Tweet your tweeps with links to your favorite Bible passages.
5. Share your thoughts with others by responding to polls and leaving comments through YouVersion Live.
4. Put a massive Bible search engine to work, so you’re no longer left saying, “It’s somewhere in the back…”
3. Find 41 different ways to say “Jesus wept.”

Amazon Wireless is live

Shameless advertisement post…

I received an e-mail earlier this week announcing that AmazonWireless is now “live.”

I’ve already used the service during it’s earlier beta stage and loved it!

I purchased a brand new Blackberry Curve 8900 for $50, when AT&T wanted $199. (It’s now $.01 with a two-year AT&T contract.)

AmazonWireless is a new website by Amazon.com that offers cell phones and wireless plans, easy shopping without rebate hassles, and FREE two-day shipping.

AmazonWireless makes it easy for customers to upgrade their phone if they already have a plan, or if they want to establish new cell phone service, has tried to make it simple to find the right phone, service plan, and options.

Customers can shop for phones by carrier, phone feature, price, color, and brand. The site’s shopping cart will guide them through each stage of the purchase process, where they’ll find familiar Amazon features like bestseller lists, detailed product descriptions, and customer reviews.

A few things I loved about the site..

  • First and foremost – the great pricing.
  • Secondly, the free shipping.
  • And third, you can shop for phones on AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile all on one easy to use site.

Now if only they had an easy/cheap way to buy unlocked Android phones, we’d really be in business….

Just as a reminder, the ads and links to products on my website are most often affiliate links, meaning if you click on the links and make a purchase, you’re helping support my blogging habit. I’m aware that ads can be annoying and misleading, so promise to work hard and only advertise and/or link to products and businesses I personally support.

Ubertwitter does Twitter video!

Check this out!

(embedded video)

With their latest version, Ubertwitter now posts video directly to TwitVid – straight from my BlackBerry Curve 8900!

Greatness!

This video was 26 seconds long and I posted it over AT&Ts 2G (EDGE) network. It took roughly 20 minutes to upload – not too bad! I’ll have to take some more video and see what it does on a good Wi-Fi connection as well.

I’m sure this will open up some more fun on the mobile interwebs for sure.

The latest version does have ads in it (as I mention in the video) but they weren’t distracting and wouldn’t keep me from using the software.

However, as of this morning, Ubertwitter announced they would remove the ads from the application itself:

Ads Have Been Turned Off

We have been listening and have heard you loud and clear! We will not turn advertisements on again until we can offer a a paid option with no advertisements. The paid version will be less then $5 and will likely be a year long subscription model, i.e. all upgrades for a year. If you purchase during the beta period, the year won’t start until we release version 1.0. Thank you for your patience and your feedback!

With the small ad I saw, I’d be happy to keep using it for free, but because its such a great software app (IMHO) I’ll gladly pay a couple bucks for a full version once it’s released.

testing the new wordpress blackberry app

WordPress is by far my favorite blogging software and I love the community that’s built around it and supports it. And I love even more that the developers have shown some love to BlackBerry folks by releasing a new WordPress application just for BlackBerry.

So if you’re seeing this – you can know that it works – and its awesome!

Woot woot!

Oh and I’ve included a photo from lunch yesterday as well (tacos from Fuel City in Dallas) ::

UPDATE: Was able to send this to my WordPress site – but it took FOREVER. Not sure if its something on the server side or the BlackBerry App. Will keep working with it.

testing WPhone

Just installed the WPhone plugin for my blog. Its made to make updating/administrating my blog easier from my cell phone (Blackberry 8310). Looks and works better than the default admin on a cellphone. Still wish there was a Blackberry ap for WordPress like there is for iPhone. Oh well.
