Finding motivation to de-clutter

Clearing out some clutter

Ay de mi!

I read some interesting stats from Becoming Minimalist:

  • the u.s. department of energy reports that one-quarter of people with two-car garages have so much stuff in there that they can’t park a car.
  • according to the national soap and detergent association, getting rid of clutter would eliminate 40 percent of housework in the average home.
  • the national association of professional organizers says we spend one year of our lives looking for lost items.
  • if you rent a storage facility to store your excess belongings, you’re contributing to a $154 billion industry — bigger than the hollywood film business!
  • it costs an average of $10/square foot to store items in your home.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The work of Martin Luther King Jr. and his efforts towards love, unity and non-violence can teach us a thing or two about loving our neighbor — and loving our enemies.

The continue to inspire me towards a non-violent, pacifist, loving and gracious way of life.

“The black freedom struggle is the best example of bringing together the quest for unarmed truth and unconditional love in the face of American Terrorism for 400 years. Instead of a Black al-Qaeda you get Frederick Douglas and Martin Luther.” – Dr Cornel West

Living simply in 2010

“Live simply so that others may simply live”
– Gandhi

As the new year begins, many of us have made resolutions to simplify our lives in various ways. Perhaps eating out less, starting a garden, cutting back on cable, reading more books from the local library (as opposed to purchasing them)… etc. etc.

So what are you doing to simplify your life in 2010? And how is it going so far?

Love is all you need

On December 7th, 2009 at 1:30pm GMT Starbucks invited musicians from all over the world to sing together at the same time to raise awareness for AIDS in Africa. In that one breathtaking moment, musicians from 156 countries played “All You Need is Love” together. Watch now, as musicians from all around the world come together and share a song.

You can still take part by donating your a video of yourself (or you and your friends) singing the song. Starbucks will donate a nickel to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa for every video that’s submitted.

My favorite point in the video is the boy belting out “All you need is love!” from Israel, around the mid-point in the song.

What’s your favorite point(s)?

The Kingdom of God is like a flash mob

Been re-listening to Adele’s interview with Peter Rollins over on the podcast.

Really digging his parallel between the Kingdom of God and TAZ moments (which he best describes as a flash mob).
