Jessica interviewed on ATC

A friend, Jess Davis was interviewed on NPR’s All Things Considered over the weekend about the 2008 presidential campaign.
She worked as an intern at the WDL while I was there and I worked with both her parents while at Ellis County. Now she’s News Editor at the student paper for the University of South Carolina.
Congrats to Jess. Keep up the good work.

Tracking Santa then and now

From the Google blog:
It was more than half a century ago, on Christmas Eve in 1955, that a Sears Roebuck & Co. store in Colorado Springs advertised a special hotline number for kids to call Santa. What the company didn’t know at the time was that they had inadvertently misprinted the telephone number. Instead of Santa’s workshop, the phone number put kids through to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the bi-national U.S.-Canadian military organization responsible for the aerospace defense of the U. S. and Canada. Worse, it wasn’t just any number at NORAD: it was the commander-in-chief’s operations hotline. In the spirit of the season, Colonel Harry Shoup, the director of operations at the time, had his staff check radar data for any indication of a sleigh making its way south from the North Pole. They found that indeed there were signs of Santa, and merrily gave the children who called an update on his location. Thus, a tradition was born, and NORAD has continued to help children track Santa on Christmas Eve ever since.

Google is joining the effort. This holiday season, NORAD has partnered with Google to use technology including Google Maps, Google Earth, iGoogle and YouTube to track Santa. I can remember tracking Santa with my grandfather as a child, and I’m so proud to see my company carry on his vision of doing something this special for kids around the world.

The countdown begins December 1st on NORAD’s website, where families can find a new kid-friendly game or activity every day until December 24th. And starting at 1:00 am PST on December 24th, you’ll be able to track Santa’s trip in real time. You can download Google Earth and add the NORAD Tracks Santa iGoogle gadget to your iGoogle page anytime, but make sure to come back to noradsanta.org on December 24th to download the special Santa Tracking file for an enhanced 3D Santa-tracking experience.

From the WDL:

By JOANN LIVINGSTON Daily Light Managing Editor

Waxahachie ISD sports’ biggest fan, Mary Jane Eubank, passed away Friday afternoon and her best friend, Debra Wakeland, is still in shock at Eubank’s sudden death.

“She was such a loving, caring person,” Wakeland said of the 65-year-old, who was found injured and unconscious at her home Wednesday morning. “She considered every student in Waxahachie as her child.”

Wakeland recalled her own son’s graduation ceremony and how she and Eubank – who was unmarried and who had no children – were standing together. She said she noticed Eubank crying even more than herself and asked her why?
“They’re all my children,” Eubank said to Wakeland, who told the Daily Light, “That’s how she felt.”

What a weekend… and it’s not over yet.

The stockings are hung by the chimney with care…

Yesterday (Friday) was my last day to work for Ellis County. It was a great job. I enjoyed it and I’m thankful for everyone who helped me along the way. Another opportunity came available and I was surprised that I was offered a job with Dallas County Community College District.
I’ll be working in their admin building downtown helping keep their course catalog updated online.
It’s a step up pay wise as well as benefit wise it would appear.
I’ll start the new position Wednesday, Dec. 5.
As part of wrapping up things with the county, I turned my laptop in and set it up for my boss. Not a big deal, but we ended up checking on some phone calls and complaints later than I expected so we got back to the office later than normal and I still had to finish a couple things with the computers before leaving.
Not a big deal in and of itself but apparently I didn’t hear/understand or forgot that Laurie wanted to head to Dallas at 4 p.m. DOH! She txt’d me around 4:20 asking when I’d be home. Thinking we weren’t leaving till 5 I told her I’d be home by then and then discovered through the next couple messages that that was going to mess up our schedule.
DOH!
I hate doing things like that. I hate running late, especially when someone is counting on me – and I do it far too often. I need to add that to my list of things to improve this year and next.
