one size fits all

When it comes to family, how big is too big?  Or what do you consider a small family? One size fits all definitely doesn’t relate to a family size. Every family is different.  Every couple has to decide on their own what they want for their family, how big do they want it. How many kids to they consider to be a big family?

Since we have announced the addition of our 3rd baby (which we are very excited, yet very nervous about!) I have had several people say, in response, “oh you want a big family!” Really, 3 kids is what people consider a big family? I can see how a person who only had 1 child would consider it a “big family.”  But for me and Jonathan who both grew up in a family with 3 kids, its normal.  Its a normal sized family, not big, not small. I personally consider a family big when it has 4 or more kids.

I think Jonathan and I would both agree that we would love to have a “big family” but since we have been given the experience of expanding our family by 1 child at a time this time we will see how it goes with #3 before deciding on another one.  We would both love to adopt, so if we go for #4 (in the far distant future) that may be the route we take.  You know, since I LOVE being pregnant and all (just imagine a sarcastic undertone with that).

Anyway, like I said, we both grew up with a family of 3 kids and love it. He has 2 sisters, I had 2 brothers.  Luckily, we all grew up and love each other.  There isn’t any family hate, or turmoil between any of us and we sincerely enjoy spending time together.  Its funny that as you get older, you actually become friends with your siblings.  And, I love that we get along well with each others siblings.  I can honestly say that Jonathan’s sister has become one of my best friends, and I love it!

When it comes to bigger families, I think I would be more likely to say lets go for it, rather than Jonathan.  Simply because I did get a little taste of what its like to have a bigger family growing up.  All growing up we had a family friends (the Medlins) that were just as much family as my “real” family, they were just an extension of our family.  For 35 or so years our families have lived by eachother, moved where the other family moved, went on vacations together, spent holidays together.  Some of my favorite memories growing up were when all 5 of us “siblings” got together.  We would play games, sing Bohemian Rhapsody aloud in the living room, joke with our moms (mainly the brothers did this) and laugh at our dads.  Even to this day, I always look forward to times when we can all get together. The majority of us have kids now and its fun watching a new generation become friends, its a little different though because the ages are a little off and none of them will go to the same schools or live int he same neighborhood like we did.  But its still fun and I look forward to what the future holds.

No matter what size our family becomes, whether we stop at 3 or go for #5 (hahaha, just kidding!!) My prayer and hope for our children is that they grow up loving each other and truly enjoy spending time with one another. I hope they grow to lean on each other and be there for their brother/sister – wishful thinking that #3 is a girl 😉 -  in times of need . I also hope that they grow up and love spending time with their cousins, because really they have no choice, they will be spending a lot of time with them either way! So far they love them all, so I think we’re good!

So what about you, what do you consider a “big family?”

Blog Book

photo

Last year, I printed the posts from my blog from our journey through infertility and pregnancy with twins. I wanted the boys would have a keepsake one day and know just how special they are to us.  I have decided to do that every year so the boys can have their life in print (well at least the first few years…we’ll see how long I keep it up).  I finally finished last years book and received it in the mail.  I feel like Christmas came early this year!! I absolutely love it and can’t wait for people to see it!

Holiday Traditions

Nativity Scene - minus a few wise men

Our twin boys are a year old and I know they don’t understand what Christmas is or traditions or even what presents are for that matter.  They just know that one day when they woke up they saw a big green thing in their living room covered with pretty lights and cool things to take off. Maybe next year they will start to get the idea that Christmas time is a good time of year and they will soon look forward to it coming around year after year.  But I want my kids to look forward to Christmas time because of the holiday traditions and the time spent with family.

Growing up I loved this time of year because we got to spend it with all our family, I only had 1 cousin around my age, the others were 10+ years older than me or 10+ years younger than me.  But I still looked forward to spending time with them – I still do!

Jonathan and I have been trying to think of some holiday traditions to do with our boys every year because those are the things you grow up and remember (hopefully).  I love pulling out the ornaments and trying to remember where we got all of them or who gave them to us.  I hope our boys will enjoy that too, especially the ones that are their very own.

While growing up, Christmas morning was the same year after year.  We would all go wait in my mom and dad’s room while my dad went in and made sure Santa had come and left everything where it was “supposed” to be.  I think he really just went in and went back to sleep on the couch, because it seemed to take FOREVER for him to come back.  Then we would all run to the living room and see what Santa left for us.  We all had our official Christmas morning spot in the room.  Every year we were in the same spot, and its funny because if you were to look in our living room window now on Christmas day, you would still find the 3 of us sitting in the same spot as we did when we were kids.  Some things never change!

I think one of the oddest traditions that I have heard about, and one that I will not be doing with my kids is the “elf on a shelf.”  Have you seen this little dude? He’s just plain creepy. For those of you who have no clue what I’m talking about… it’s a little elf that you put on a shelf or anywhere you want and its supposed to be a reminder for kids to be on their best behavior because the elf will tell Santa who has been naughty or nice.

Thanks, but no thanks.

I don’t need a little elf to “watch” my kids and make them think that he is going to go back and tell Santa all about their behavior.  I put the fear of God in them so they behave good all year round — just kidding ;).  Isn’t that just teaching our kids that if they behave, Santa will bring them presents.  They should behave well without the end result being presents. We don’t want to kill the “magic that is Santa” but we don’t want our boys growing up thinking they’ll always be rewarded handsomely just because they behave properly, and on the flip side, if they don’t get exactly what they want – it’s not because they’re being punished for bad behavior.

It’s difficult to fight the mentality that invades this time of year, that Christmas is all about getting the biggest and best gifts.  We always had a great Christmas growing up, we never got the biggest or hottest item that was being sold and we were fine with that (I think that’s because none of us were in to that).  My parents didn’t spend hundreds of dollars per child at Christmas (at least not that I’m aware of 😉 ), yet we still had awesome Christmas gifts and loved what we got. I read something the other day that said, on average, parents spend $500-$600 per child at Christmas time. That’s outrageous! Although when we were growing up there wasn’t the XBox, iPhone, iPad, flat screen TV’s, or any of the other 100 electronic devices that are out there now either.  Now days, the wants are greater and the price tags are higher!

I want to make sure my kids know what the meaning of Christmas is and that it’s not all about getting presents. My boys have a book about the Christmas story and one part of it says “We give gifts to each other to celebrate the birth of Christ.”  I don’t want them to grow up thinking that just because its Christmas they are entitled to getting things.  I want to see my boys faces fill with joy and anticipation as they open their presents on Christmas morning because they know we love them and celebrate them.  Not because some guy in a red suit gave them things on their wish list.

Here’s to making Christmas memories and traditions to follow for years to come!

Becoming Savvy…

If you look up the definition for the word Savvy, you will see it means well informed, smart, etc.  If you are savvy at something, it means you know what you are doing, people look to you for answers in that subject.  My husband is VERY tech savvy and I am, well….snot savvy! Haha My brother is savvy at languages while my other brother is savvy at gymnastics.  Well we have a dear friend, Keri Lehmann, who is savvy at all things body care!  She is a certified nail technician (and by the way does the absolute best manis/pedis you will EVER have) and she has made her own sugar scrubs, body lotions, etc for years.  Well she finally decided to get up the gusto and start selling her products so all of us could enjoy them.  She is lovely creator of, wait for it………Savvy Boheme. As a side note, my husband built her website, isn’t it awesome!

Anyway, These products aren’t just your ordinary lotions, cremes, bath salts, etc.  They are all natural, organic and fair trade ingredients.  The sugar scrubs are natural enough to eat.  Ok, Don’t eat them, but if they just happen to get into your mouth as you are putting it on your face, its not gonna kill you, its actually kinda tasty.  If you ever get a chance to sit down with Keri, ask her about her products and the benefits of them. She will gladly, and enthusiastically, share her story with you.  In fact just sit and talk with her about life in general.  Keri is an absolutely amazing woman and you’ll love her just as much as I do.

Keri only uses essential oils to fragrance her products and they smell amazing! But I will warn you, if you smell her bars of soap, you may want to eat one of them, they smell so good…until you remember its soap! Most moisturizers and lotions have extra “stuff” and preservatives mixed in and as Keri explains, all that “stuff” acts as a barrier, almost like saran wrap, on your skin and doesn’t allow the nutrients to actually get into your skin.  So your skin doesn’t really get the full moisturizing and nutritional benefit from the product and you just waste your money.  When you use ingredients that aren’t natural, your body doesn’t know how to process it, so it has to work extra hard to figure out what to do with it.

A lot of body care and personal products are made with fillers and solvents, like forms of phenol and phthalates…anyone heard of BPA?  Look them up sometime and see what all the health problems they can cause!  They are known to cause female and male infertility and fetal toxicity (which was a shock to me) and for all you fellow scientific people out there, some phenols are germicidal and are used in formulating disinfectants. Others possess estrogenic or endocrine descrupting activity.

I don’t know about you but when I look at the ingredient list on some of my lotion bottles, I can’t pronounce half of them on that long list.  So when I pick up her products and there is a short, simple list of ingredients (all of which I can pronounce and know what they are) its refreshing and makes me feel a whole lot better about putting it on my skin.

Knowing all this has opened my eyes and has caused me to go through all my body care lotions, soaps, moisturizers, etc and toss them all out!  I now only use soaps, lotions, sugar scrubs, bath salts, etc from Savvy Boheme!  I absolutely love them and am sold for life! Some of my personal favorite items are the african black soap (ABS) and Raven’s Balm (to be used as a moisturizer after the ABS). The ABS is one word, A-mazing! It completely strips all the oils from your face so is it a necessity to use a moisturizer after cleaning with the soap.  You can use any of her shea butters, raw sugar scrubs (for an extra benefit of exfoliating as well as moisturizing) but my favorite is the Balm.  You only need a tiny bit and it moisturizes the entire face but also keeps it from feeling all oily.  I have used the ABS for a little over a week now and can tell a difference already.  My face seems to be clearer and the skin looks fresher and younger.  But the most noticeable difference to me is that it doesn’t feel as oily throughout the day.  I have always had a problem with an oily face and after searching many many years  for a product to help with this, I finally found one!

I also love the Whipped Shea Butter and Raw Sugar Scrub.  I have used the Shea butter on my lovely souvenir stretch marks from the twins and it has actually decreased their appearance! I thought I would never be able to get rid of them because, man was I stretched to the max with those boys. I have recently started using her soaps (the Bliss soap smells awesome) and my routine is to use the body soap and then the sugar scrub.  I have actually used the sugar scrub to shave with and it works great as well. Because it moisturizes the legs enough, you don’t need to use lotion afterwards, but I do use the shea butter because that’s just how I roll.  Now that I have given you the knowledge and some recommendations, go get your very own savvy boheme products, you won’t regret it, I PROMISE! You can order them by clicking HERE

Thank you Keri for sharing your products with the rest of us so we can enjoy them too!!

Fall TV line up

This probably goes without saying, but I am a little excited about this falls TV line up. Not only because I have to put up with horrible daytime TV all day long and when 7:00 rolls around I’m so ready for prime time TV, but because some of my favorite shows are back for a new season. Here are some of my favorite shows I’m looking forward to this season.

Monday:

House (ch. 4 Fox) – I’ve watched this show for years, I love the diagnostic aspect of the “medical drama”. Even though most of the show is unrealistic, its still good!

Quints By Surprise
(TLC) – So this one isn’t technically “Prime Time” TV since it’s on a cable network but I like it. It premiered a few weeks ago and is similar to the old seasons of John and Kate Plus 8, but better! She’s not rude or degrading to her husband and he actually helps out. The show is about a couple from Austin, TX (maybe that’s why we like them, they are Texans) who have an older daughter, I think 6 or 7, and then have a set of quintuplets. If you haven’t seen it, you should try to catch it sometime.

Tuesday:

The Biggest Loser (Ch. 5 NBC) – Another one of those reality TV shows, but this one is different because people are actually changing their lives. Its amazing to see how they transform their bodies and what they look like at the end of the season. The only thing is (and I don’t know why) but I usually end up eating a bowl of ice cream while watching this show. It’s typically the only time I eat ice cream (well at home), hmmm.

Glee (Ch. 4 Fox) – This is a new show that I have started watching. It’s basically a musical turned TV show. I’m not necessarily hooked on this show, its just good and if I catch it then great.

Parenthood (Ch. 5 NBC) – This is a show that premiered last season and Jonathan and I have both started watching it. It puts a funny spin on family and parenthood.

Wednesday:

Let’s face it, there is absolutely nothing on Wednesdays to watch. This is when I catch up on all the shows that I wasn’t able to watch earlier in the week or later the week before that are recorded on our DVR.

Thursday: AKA, my medical soaps night and the one night of the week that between 8:00-10:00 you don’t disturb me. So basically Jonathan will become a single parent between these hours on Thursday nights! Ok, I may feed one of the boys if they are just that hungry, I’m not that mean. 😉

The Office (Ch. 5 NBC) – This show is kind of a hit or miss with me. Overall I love the show, it’s funny, but there are episodes that are just plain dumb. This is the final season with Michael (Steve Carrell) and it will be interesting to see how they write him off the show. It will also be interesting to see how the show continues without him next season…it could either do great or be a complete flop.

Grey’s Anatomy (Ch. 8 ABC) – I am stoked that this show is coming back on next week!! I can’t wait to see what all happens after the season finale last season. This is my take on what happened last season. So at the beginning of the season they bring in basically a whole new cast and the viewers didn’t really like the new characters so what do they do, get rid of them and kill them all off. There are a few of the new characters that were some viewer favorites and they kept them. It will be interesting to see what happens next!!

Private Practice (Ch. 8 ABC) – This spin off of Grey’s Anatomy has become a hit and one of my top favorite shows. The season finale last season was intense and they killed off one of the main characters. I was shocked but last season was the season of killing off characters from shows…it seems that every show I watched killed off at least one person, geeze. A lot is going to change at Oceanside Wellness this season, tune in and find out what, I know I am!

I can’t wait for Monday night to get here!!

The holidays…

ARE OVER!! Not that I’m happy about that but life can finally calm down now and get back to normal. What did we do for the holidays you ask…well, here is a look at what all we did the last few weeks/months. Over the last month I have taken several family photos. There were the Treadaways, our pastor and his family…

…And then Jalyn, our friends Josh and Shalyn’s baby…
Jalyn
…then there were the Nash’s. Gracelyn, who is 2, didn’t really want any part of taking photos so it made for a difficult day, along with my camera that was acting up…that’s a whole other story…
Nash's

We went with a group of our friends from church to see Bethlehem Revisited in Waxahachie…
Bethlehem Revisited

Our holiday festivities with family started on Dec 21 when we held our annual Turner-Medlin Family Christmas/Jake’s Birthday party. We all went to the Medlin’s and had some yummy chili and all the “kids” (we’re too old to be called kids) did a white elephant gift exchange and then Jake opened up his birthday presents. Jake turned 8 this year and I can’t believe he’s getting so old. I remember the day he was born…anyway, we had fun time together and couldn’t wait to do it all over again on New Years Day, when we celebrate my dad and Bob’s birthday…more on that later in the post.

On the 23rd we had all of Jonathan’s family over to our house for dinner and games. We all had a great time and always look forward to seeing everyone. (to see any of these collages bigger, simply click on it and viola)

Christmas Eve we went to our parents church for a candlelight service and then back to my parents house for dinner. After dinner we headed over to my aunts house to spend some time with her and my cousins and their kids. Had a good time seeing all of them and about 10:00pm my cousin’s son, Bryce, announced that “there was good news and bad news…the good news is that santa is in Texas, the bad news is that santa is in Texas and I’m not in bed!” So with that we all headed home.

Christmas morning Jonathan and I opened gifts at our house, well some of them…I made Jonathan go on a scavenger hunt for his gift. He started out at our house and then headed to the park which sent him to our pastors house where they slipped the present in their mailbox for me. I think he enjoyed it but maybe not as much as his present which was two tickets to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert.

After that we went to my padres house for Christmas with my familia and ate a great lunch and opened gifts. And as always, we let the kids go first which only takes about 10 minutes total because they rip through them all at warp speed. After lunch and presents we decided to play a game of family feud…that was a lot of fun, except my dad kept forgetting the rules! My niece got a doll house and my nephew got a new Wii so they were both preoccupied with those the majority of the afternoon and that was a gift to all of us!!! That’s the only way we were able to play family feud.
Later that afternoon we headed over to Jonathan’s parents and hung out there a while. Tim and Kara got rock band for the wii so we played that for a while and then Jonathan’s dad made a great ham for dinner so we ate and opened some gifts. Over all, we had a wonderful Christmas and are blessed by our family and friends that spent it with us!

Then for about a week our lives were back to semi normalcy…I went back to work but Jonathan had the week off. New Years Eve we spent over at Richard and Amber’s house playing games and eating some yummy mexican food. Then for the countdown to bring in the new year we lit some sparklers–that’s always fun!
Day 106 ~ 365 Days Project New Years Eve '08
NYE '08

And finally, Welcome 2009! We have entered into yet another new year. We slept in new years day because lets face it, we were up late partying the night before!! You know us, we’re such the partiers-HA! Then later that afternoon my family and the Medlins came over to our house and we grilled some fajitas and celebrated our dad’s birthdays! Honestly I can’t remember how old they both are–somewhere in the early 60’s! yikes, sorry guys, I love you, but that’s old! Day 107 ~ 365 Days Project

We always have fun getting together but don’t do it as often as I would like. The Medlin’s have always been a second family to us, Bob and Vicki were like our “other parents” and Ty and Tami were like siblings growing up. It’s so much fun now that we are all grown up and adults…We’ve all grown up together and shared special occasions together as we each get married, have kids and watch each of us, or them, become parents for the first time…it’s been fun!! A great way to start a new year. I’ve been told that how you spend your New Year’s Day sets the stage for that year…we’re off to a great start!

Because we had so much fun on New Year’s Day, you get two collages.

Tonight Jonathan and I went to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert for his Christmas gift and had a blast. This is my 5 year to go to the concert and I have loved every year. It’s a Christmas tradition that I had and then when Jonathan and I started dating we decided to make it our tradition. We are going on a cruise in February so we decided that we just wouldn’t be able to spring for tickets to TSO this year and the cruise. We were both bummed about not getting to go, Jonathan was pretty bummed so I decided to surprise him with tickets for Christmas. He tried many times to get me to agree to get tickets and it was hard to tell him “No, I just don’t think we can this year” when I had already bought 2 tickets. Anyway, we went to the concert and love it! The camera police are usually out making sure you don’t take any pictures of the concert but I was able to sneak some with my camera phone–gotta love them! So here are some illegal pictures from the TSO concert:
TSO concert
TSO concert
After the concert we met Jen and Jed for dinner at Patrizio’s in Highland Park Village….let me tell you, they have some amazing italian food! I’ve been there before and have always wanted to take Jonathan so I figured why not now! We had a good time with Jen and Jed and then decided to get some Italian Gelato at Paciugo’s to go with our Italian food.

And that concludes our holiday festivities! I hope everyone had a good time with their family and friends over the holidays and here’s to a wonderful new year!

Coincidence?

Have you ever heard of something called laminin? Here is how Wikipedia describes them :”Laminins are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue.” Laminins are what hold us together….LITERALLY. They are cell adhesion molecules. They are what holds one cell of our bodies to the next cell. Without them, we would literally fall apart. With my science background I knew all this already, what I didn’t know is what laminin looked like.
Below is what the structure of laminin looks like. Keep in mind that this is NOT a ‘Christian portrayal’ of it. If you look up laminin in any scientific/medical piece of literature, this is what you will see:
laminin
Now tell me that our God is not Amazing!
The ‘glue’ that holds us together…ALL of us…is in the shape of the cross.

Colossians 1:15-17 comes to mind.
‘He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things HOLD TOGETHER.’ Colossians 1:15-17

Thousands of years before the world knew anything about laminin, Paul penned those words. And now we see that from a very LITERAL standpoint, we are held together…one cell to another…by the cross.

You would never convince me that is anything other than the mark of a Creator who knew EXACTLY what laminin ‘glue’ would look like long before Adam even breathed his first breath!! To some people this is nothing more than a simple coincidence but for those of us who have Faith in the Lord we know it is soo much more than that! It’s just another way our God shows us He is there and real. He is our creator and is behind every little molecule and chromosome that makes us who we are.
We praise YOU, Lord!

My Love List

This is what’s called my love list. I tend to go through phases where I feel like all I do is complain, or focus on what’s wrong, instead of what’s right. So I’m copying someone who has already done this. This is a list of things that you love, the only things is that you can’t include a single person you know on your list. No “I love the way my husband laughs”. This is about stripping away everyone who defines you and figuring out what you (not his partner; not their mother/daughter/sister/friend) love. So here it is:

I love:
The first cool mornings in fall. I love fresh cut grass. I love a lush green lawn. I love a big bowl of cereal. I love spending time with family and friends. I love playing with my dog. I love sleeping in on a Saturday morning. I love Mosaic tables or vases. I love planting fresh flowers. I love tulips. I love spending time sitting on the porch with a good drink(non-alcoholic) and the sun shinning on you to keep you warm. I love learning new things. dressing up or just wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I love a good belly laugh. I love when my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard. I love the color orange. I love sleeping in when it’s pouring rain outside. I love having no plans and a day where I can just do what I want. I love sticking my feet in warm, white sand. I love a good hamburger. I love grilling outside with friends. I love organization and the sense of accomplishment after a full day’s work. I love viewing baby pictures. I love photography. I love finding laughter in everyday situations and having enough conviction to explode into a cackle or snort, without feeling embarrassed. I love a gorgeous sunset. I love walking or sitting on the beach after a day of fun in the sun. I love simple, guilty pleasures to indulge my senses in. I love the smell of autumn winds and the sounds of leaves rustling on the trees.
I love the fact that this is my life, good and bad, as complicated or complex as life can be sometimes, its my life and I make it what it is–simply put, I’m surrounded by loving people who make me who I am and I wouldn’t change it for the world, this is my life and I love it.

Am I invisible?

Just a quick little vent session here without being too detailed. I have never felt so undervalued, inadequate, and invisible in my life as I have this week. And not by my husband–just to be clear. If it’s not too selfish to ask, would you please pray that things will work out with a situation and God will show me his plan!

Relativism

Relativism is the idea that some element or aspect of experience or culture is relative to, i.e., dependent on, some other element or aspect. Some relativists claim that humans can understand and evaluate beliefs and behaviors only in terms of their historical or cultural context. The term often refers to truth relativism, which is the doctrine that there are no absolute truths, i.e., that truth is always relative to some particular frame of reference, such as a language or a culture.

I know your probably asking…”why did she just give me the definition of relativism?” I have a point, really. Yesterday I read a post on Brandi’s blog about her experience with a new community group and how they mixed young college kids with “older” married couples. she made a point that college kids don’t want to mix with married people…not beacuse they are married but because they are “older” –relatively speaking. This got me thinking a little bit. I am 26 years old, I’ll be 27 in 3 months. To me that’s not old–ya it’s older, but it’s not old. But when I was 19 and in college a 27 year old was old. In my 19 year old mind being 8 years older was a huge difference and when I become 26-27 I will be old. It’s all about relativity peeps because now I’m thinking, I’m not old, old is –now don’t get offended, I’m using this as an illustration 😉 — the 40 year old, I mean I’m mid life–half of my life is over! But when I’m 40 years old, I’ll probably be thinking, I’m not old, I still have 1/2 my life left to live. There is a huge difference in the way you view things and they perspective you have. Of course being a little older and wiser helps too — haha

So there you have it, my thoughts on relativism! I’m sure you enjoyed it.
