Adventures in Fatherhood: Just me and the boys

Boys and I
The boys and I on their one month birthday

Well, it’s been just over eight weeks since the boys were born — and tomorrow is their two month birthday.

And like it or not, the powers that be have decided that eight weeks is plenty of time for a woman who’s had a C-Section to recover, so my wonderful Life is returning to work today.

To make things easier on the boys, I’ve opted to take vacation time this week to watch them by myself at home. And since our office is closed next week for the holidays, I’ll be at home with them a second week before our moms take over after the start of the year.

It should be an interesting two weeks! I’m thrilled to get to spend so much time with the boys, but I know it’s going to be far more work than I realize.

Laurie’s suggested I’ll probably do more work during the next two weeks than I ever would have done at the office — she’s probably right.

When I first agreed to it, the boys had just come home and they were sleeping 95% of the time. So as the time’s been getting closer, I’ve been looking forward to all the “extra work” I’d get done on some of my projects.

But as the time’s gotten even closer — the boys are becoming more and more active and down time is becoming less and less.

So… if you have something waiting on my to-do list… I’ll do my best – but I’m not promising anything right now.

And you may be hearing/seeing a lot from me online… or hardly nothing at all.

Who knows? We’ll see how it goes and keep our fingers crossed that I won’t be calling for help after the first few hours.

Adventures in Fatherhood – Live blogging tonight

So after a rough week for My Life and the boys at home, I told Laurie to take an Ambien tonight and let me handle the night time feedings.

She gladly accepted, with the condition that I would go to bed once she wakes up in the morning and sleep as long as possible during the day tomorrow.

Are we crazy? Probably, but I figured I’d let you in on the fun tonight by live-blogging as we go.

Adventures in fatherhood – All hands on deck

As a parent of twins… there are days you really wish you had four arms.

And then there are mornings like today… when you wish you had eight.

5 a.m. feeding
5 a.m. feeding

2 boys.

3 spit-ups.

1 dirty bib.

1 new outfit.

1 nasty vomit that landed right in poor Hayden’s face 🙁

1 frantic dad trying to find his aspirator to finish cleaning him up.

Yup, eight arms would have been nice this morning…. that and an extra 45 minutes.

Of course it could always be worse

Happy Birthday to my boys

Yesterday was our boys’ one month birthday.

Hard to believe it’s been a month already (and in many ways… hard to believe it’s only been a month ;-)).

And through it all I think Laurie’s found her new muse(s). She’s being writing some great blog posts lately — as well as catching her photography fever again.

It’s really been a thrill to see her with the boys over the past month.

She’s amazed me day in and day out… especially considering how little sleep she’s been getting… and even more so knowing she’s been at home with the boys all day by herself since I started back to work last week.

I’m so excited to share this new part of our journey with her!

For those of you wondering… Presley (our dog) has been hanging out at Laurie’s parents’ the last month as we’ve adapted to having the boys at home. She came back home Friday night and it’s been weird having her around the house because she seems sooo much larger than what I remember. She’s behaved great with the boys… she just seems so much bigger than I remember.

Once we took this picture yesterday I think I understand why…

I’ve gotten used to being around 6-7 lb babies rather than a 15 lb dog. She dwarfs them! (and I think Hayden’s realizing that! :-))

Adventures in Fatherhood – A surprise attack

DATE: Nov. 6, 2010
TIME of INCIDENT: 13:30 approx.
LOCATION of INCIDENT: Living room couch

After successfully thwarting three major spit-up attacks earlier this morning, things were looking good for America’s Top Dad.

His wife had left him at home with his boys so she could enjoy some much deserved time watching her nephew play football.

America’s Top Dad (ATD) was excited to have some more time with just him and his boys and mixed up the formula for their noon-time feedings.

Hayden took his bottle with very little trouble, while his brother Ian waited anxiously nearby.

Knowing full well that his boys have a tendency to launch a spit-up attack at moment’s notice, ATD took care not to jostle Hayden after feeding him and keep him as upright as possible. After his feeding and a good 10-15 minutes of holding, ATD felt confident that he had avoided any spit-up attack from Hayden.
