Brian McLaren – A New Kind of Christianity

Brian McLaren has a new book coming out shortly and Spencer Burke’s already talking to him about it…

In the book, A New Kind of Christianity, Brian lays out 10 questions people seem to be wrestling with universally.

The questions include:

  • The Narrative Question: What Is the Overarching Storyline of the Bible?
  • The Authority Question: How Should the Bible Be Understood?
  • The God Question: Is God Violent?
  • The Jesus Question: Who is Jesus and Why is He Important?
  • The Gospel Question: What Is the Gospel?
  • The Church Question: What Do We Do About the Church?
  • The Sex Question: Can We Find a Way to Address Sexuality Without Fighting About It?
  • The Future Question: Can We Find a Better Way of View the Future?
  • The Pluralism Question: How Should Followers of Jesus Relate to People of Other Religions?
  • The What Do We Do Now Question: How Can We Translate Our Quest into Action?

Trusting the messenger

02.23.DontBombAfghan.WDC.08oct01

I find it interesting, that when you talk to people about news and where they get their news from, most people remain fairly loyal to their brand of choice.

Some will swear by a local news stations — especially their investigative reports.

Some will swear by CNN or MSNBC.

Others will swear about CNN and MSNBC and swear by FOX News.

Some will rave about their local daily paper, while others will curse their local daily paper.

Either way, we’ve found a source we can trust and only rarely look elsewhere.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The work of Martin Luther King Jr. and his efforts towards love, unity and non-violence can teach us a thing or two about loving our neighbor — and loving our enemies.

The continue to inspire me towards a non-violent, pacifist, loving and gracious way of life.

“The black freedom struggle is the best example of bringing together the quest for unarmed truth and unconditional love in the face of American Terrorism for 400 years. Instead of a Black al-Qaeda you get Frederick Douglas and Martin Luther.” – Dr Cornel West

Weekly menu (1.18.10)

Setting our our weekly menu in advance has been a God-send this year. Sure it takes a little time on the weekend (or Monday morning) but it saves us so much time later in the week trying to figure out what to cook. It’s also helping us save money because we’re less likely to get frustrated, give up and go out to eat when nothing comes to mind.

So here’s this week’s menu…

Monday Dinner
Spaghetti

Tuesday Dinner
Flautas and beans

Wednesday Dinner
Crockpot Chicken Tacos

Thursday Dinner
Meatballs and Rice

Friday Dinner
Beef Lasagna (prepackaged mix)

Saturday Dinner:
Small group

So what are you having for dinner this week?

Use this as a challenge to come up with your own menu and then share it with the rest of us.

All that good cancelled out with one lousy statement

This week, on the 700 Club, the Christian Broadcasting Network was raising funds to help send aid and relief to Haiti after their violent 7.0 earthquake Tuesday.

According to a press release:

(Pat Robertson) called for prayer for (Haiti). His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster. They have sent a shipment of millions of dollars worth of medications that is now in Haiti, and their disaster team leaders are expected to arrive tomorrow and begin operations to ease the suffering.

And yet no one’s going to remember that or even consider it because of a statement made by CBN founder, Pat Robertson…

Orphans and the tragedy in Haiti

Earlier this week I shared a Tweet from a friend in Austin:

PRAYER: RT @eloranicole @tiffsoutherland: friend who was adopting from Haiti-met child-going this week 2 get her-found out child was killed

It was a hard Tweet to read (and share).

Essentially, this friend of a friend of a friend were in the process of adopting a little girl from Haiti. They were set to go to Haiti this week and pick her up – but discovered the girl had died in the earthquake.
