Internet Power

In case anyone’s missed it (doubt that’s the case if you’re reading this), there’s a new technology available for learning, fun and communication – I believe they call it the Internet.

Find out more via this 1995 video:

Just 12 years ago and the top weather site mentioned in the video was “The Weatherman.” There’s also not even a single mention of Google in the video – my how things change.

Thanks to CommonCraft for the heads up.

Yes. Latin. I know. I’ve always wondered where this Latin text comes from – found out today thanks to Flickr. You may not see it very often, but if you’re ever looking at a website design or a mock-up design for a project, chances are you’ll run across some of this text.

So what is it?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

I also just discovered that there is a Firefox Add-On for my favorite browser that will generate the text for you in sentence or paragraph form. Greatness.

Otherwise check out www.lipsum.com and generate all the dummy text you need. Might give you a good indication on whether or not people are paying attention to your emails or class projects.

Web to become primary vehicle for LA Times breaking news

From Editor and Publisher:

Speaking to hundreds of Los Angeles Times journalists in the newspaper’s Harry Chandler auditorium this morning, editor James O’Shea outlined a bold plan to increase traffic and revenue from LATimes.com in the face of an increasingly difficult economic climate for newspaper publishers, and urged journalists to think of the Web site as the newspaper’s primary vehicle for news.
“We can’t hide from the fact that smart competitors such as Google and Craigslist are stealing readers and advertisers from us through innovative strategies that are undermining the business model we’ve relied on for decades,” said O’Shea, whose remarks were published in their entirety on the paper’s Web site.
“Currently we have a newspaper staff and an LATimes.com staff,” he said. “No more. From now on, there are no two staffs, there is just one. And we will function as one. One of Russ’s first jobs will be to help set up that newsroom.”
He said that LATimes.com would become the paper’s “primary vehicle for breaking news 24 hours a day.”

I wonder how quickly other newspapers will take notice and start changing with the times.

What a change

After Mike and I have talked this week about the future of print media (newspapers in particular) we began thinking about the future and how our company can succeed.

He had an interesting meeting with a client who pretty much told him, they (as well as others in their industry) don’t even consider newspapers a valid place to advertise in their market.

“I don’t read. And neither do our customers. If we want information we watch it on the news or grab it off the internet.”

So in an effort to re-focus some things, I’ve refocused myself on the paper’s website today and tonight.

I’ve been piecing together a hopefully decent database driven site.

I was able to post the entire A section of our paper online in approx. 12 minutes today, where I was spending 30-45 for the same amount of news in Belton.

It’s not quite where I want it yet — but the times are a changing.
