Posterous as a Twitter Client
Related to my questions from last week, between Posterous vs Tumblr, Lifehack.org has shared an interested idea for the micro-blogging site Posterous.
(BTW – Mashable picked Tumblr over Posterous but a survey of their readers showed a preference of Tumblr over Posterous)
United as ONE
Last week Peter Rollins wrote (in the spirit of the Apostle Paul)::
You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither high church nor low church, Fox nor CNN, citizen not alien, capitalist nor communist, gay nor straight, beautiful nor ugly, East nor West, theist nor atheist, Israel nor Palestine, hawk nor dove, American nor Iraqi, married nor divorced, uptown nor downtown, terrorist nor freedom fighter, paedophile nor loving parent, priest nor prophet, fame nor obscurity, Christian nor non-Christian, for all are made one in Christ Jesus. Today, Thomas shared thoughts on Unity vs Uniformity in our tribes and communities of faith.
I believe wholeheartedly in the “ones” in this passage (Eph 4:1-16):
- one body
- one Spirit
- one hope
- one Lord
- one faith
- one baptism
- one God and Father of all… who is over all and through all and in all.
This is unity… but this doesn’t demand uniformity. The very passage speaks of having different giftings… we are gifted with different things so that we can make a stronger WHOLE than the SUM OF OUR PARTS.
We are all different. We all have different experiences… different baggage… different tastes and preferences and worldviews. This diversity makes the collective whole stronger.
He continued, saying that our communities of faith should not be melting pots where everything is thrown out and the end result is goop, but instead we should be salads — where everything is put together to add value and unique flavor and nutrition.
A carrot by itself is OK but add it with spinach or lettuce and tomatoes and you get a tasty salad. Throw in a few nuts (like most of our communities of faith have :-)) and you have WOW! All the flavors blend together as one.
Perhaps this is why Jesus prayed for the generations of Christ followers that would come after him ::
I’m praying not only for them
But also for those who will believe in me
Because of them and their witness about me.
The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind—
Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
So they might be one heart and mind with us.
Then the world might believe that you, in fact, sent me.
The same glory you gave me, I gave them,
So they’ll be as unified and together as we are—
I in them and you in me.
Then they’ll be mature in this oneness,
And give the godless world evidence
That you’ve sent me and loved them
In the same way you’ve loved me. – John 17:20-23
I hope that in all my communities of faith I offer spaces of grace. Where the labels are shed at the door and a space is created where everyone is equal, regardless of where they are in their walk, regardless of what bounded set they find themselves in, regardless how far they are from the center point as long as we’re all helping draw one another to the True Center Point.
Seth Godin talks church
Marketing guru Seth Godin gave an interview to StreamingFaith.com. They naturally talked church and social media/marketing ::
Faith matters. A lot. Religion often gets in the way of faith. Religion, the scolding, rules-based part of religion, the part used as a lever in life or politics to insist that people follow a certain person or a certain idea… that’s not spreading so fast online.
But faith, faith is the salve we’ve always wanted and still want. Barack Obama offers a lot of people a different kind of faith, and we can see how it resonates. People want to believe, they want to be surrounded by people who believe and they want to feel good about it. What an opportunity.

Headphonaught’s Book Club v.2
Well, last week I mentioned a book club that’s being formed by my mate Thomas.
During the week Thomas decided that rather than using Google Groups to host the discussion/forum Facebook would be a better route. I’ve used both and don’t have a huge preference between one or the other. Of course in both groups I’ve been involved in, there hasn’t been super amounts of discussion either. I’ve got Thomas’ thoughts below – but what do you think? Do you prefer one over the other?
Thanks to everyone who has shown an interesting in getting involved… especially JD over in Texas and Dan in Glenrothes for their encouragement and support!
OK… so this is where we are going with this >>
1) I have set up an “invite-only” Facebook group > the admins (JD, Dan & myself) will invite people who have expressed an interest in being part of this journey. Facebook gives us the tools to do this >> invites / discussion posting etc >> and encourages community – you have to be a member of Facebook and your identity is known to the group (no nicknames etc). This will make us more honest and accountable >> key prerequisites for an egalitarian community.
2) We are considering a number of books… but a couple of front runners are THE TIPPING POINT [Malcolm Gladwell] and/or EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE [Brian D. McLaren]. We can run multiple discussions, if desired… this can be as linear or non-linear as we want it to be.
3) One thing I am interesting in… as well… is meeting up with folks in Glasgow for f2f conversations. Ally & Jay have expressed an interest in this too. I would encourage you to look at this option in addition to online.
4) Using Facebook will, I hope, allow us to get know each other a bit better. Hooking up and conducting one on one conversations is encouraged.
I hope this makes sense… I don’t want to exclude folks not on Facebook… but the tool is the best one we have. If anything, you now have a legit reason for joining up.
