Interesting potluck themes

Potluck dinner

As part of our weekly community group meetings (most every Saturday at 6 p.m. – come join us) we always start out with a meal/snack of some sort. I think I’ve been delegated the food committee chairman and I have to admit, sometimes I’m at a loss for ideas.

I’d love to go all out each week, with “gourmet cuisine” but it seems that getting folks together once a week tends to be hard enough without adding an undue burden of everyone having to come up with a new dish/meal.

So here’s the question:

What creative potluck & party themes have you seen or would you like to see at a get together/party?

Some great potluck ideas I’ve enjoyed in the past:

  • Greek/Mediterranean
  • Cajun
  • Mexican – always a big hit
  • Italian
  • Baked potato bar
  • Make your own pizza

I did find one great thread that suggests building your potluck meal around dishes that contain one main ingredient (ala like Food Networks Iron Chef) or dishes with the same color.

A few other great potluck ideas:

  • The last meal – everyone brings a dish based on the first letter of their last name. Blundell’s bring beans, Lehmann’s bring lima beans, Ellcey’s bring eggplant, etc. etc.
  • Brinner – Breakfast for dinner. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, etc.
  • Vegetarian – This could be a great win, or a flop depending on your group 🙂
  • Thanksgiving – Who says you can only have turkey, pumpkin pie and all the fixings on Thanksgiving day? Why not have a huge Thanksgiving dinner in the middle of July as well? For that matter, you can probably come up with any number of holiday meals to have “out of season” and probably save some cash as well since no one else will be fighting you for a 20 lb turkey.
  • Slow cooking – Only dishes cooked in a slow cooker are allowed. This might be fun to see how creative people get.

Another great idea to always encourage is for everyone to bring extra copies of their recipes to the potluck dinner. That way if folks try a dish they really love they can go home with the recipe and don’t have to hope someone remembers to send it to them later.

I’m also thinking I need to get more people in on The Pioneer Woman’s website and/or cookbook and do a Pioneer Woman Cookbook theme…

So, there’s the task I want to know what other clever/successful themes you’ve come up with… comment away!

Another succesful dinner club

We weren’t sure this month’s dinner club would come to fruition with the sudden horrible nasty swelling Poison Ivy rash I had this week (mmm that sounds appetizing) – but with the offensive steroids I took Friday evening and Saturday morning we figured what the heck – let’s do it.
We had a great time with friends from encounter.
Brian and Heather came, along with James and Mary and Jose and Sally.
We had a great meal full of Mediterranean flare.

Laurie and I made Fattouch and Kufta, as well as white rice to put under the Kufta.
Brian and Heather brought a Roasted Chicken with vegetables (I know it had a much fancier name than that but I’ll have to let Brian or Heather remind me of it).
Jose and Sally made a pasta dish with spinach and cheese.
And James and Mary made “Chocolatosophogus” with “Greek coco.”
We also had a great time after dinner with a rousing game of ImagineIf and “Big Bubba” aka “Big Booty.”
It’s amazing what you can find out about people through a game like ImagineIf and even Big Bubba – maybe even more so than a Myspace survey.
Heather took the win on the last round of ImagineIf and won the “Winners Sombrero.”

Oddly enough though, the sombrero is still sitting in our living room. I wonder what that means?
Of course all the photos are online at Flickr – so be sure and check them out. Although without Josh and Shalyn snapping so many photos this time we ended up with a few less than last time. But everyone got their moment to shine.
Next month we’re looking to do a cajun cuisine night and hoping for some really good gumbo so be on the lookout for a possible invite.
Anyone else doing a dinner club at their place – or at a friends? Let us know what theme’s you’ve used and how they turned out.

2nd monthly Casa de Blundell Dinner Club

Well, if the new steroids I’m taking for poison ivy start kicking in as they’re expected, we’re still planning to host our 2nd monthly Casa de Blundell Dinner Club tomorrow night.
Tomorrow night’s theme is “My Big Fat Mediterranean Dinner.”
I’m looking forward to it. I’m a big fan of Greek, Lebanese and Mediterranean meals. It will be fun to see what everyone comes up with.

We’re planning to fix Fattoush (one of my favorite meals in Nigeria) as well as Kofta – another favorite while I was in Nigeria.
Funny how my favorite meals in the middle of Africa were Lebanese 😉 although I did love the red stew we had during several meals.
We’ll let you know how everything turns out – as long as the steroids kick in.

We just wrapped up our first monthly “dinner club” at Casa de Blundell. We had a great time 13 adults and one baby Gracelyn. Our last guests left just before 11 p.m. and we enjoyed some great Mexican food made by all. Aaron and I also partook in some good imported Mexican beer before it was all said and done.
Tonights menu:
Cheese poppers and bacon wrapped jalapeños – Shane and Sarah
Chips, queso and guacamole – Richard and Amber
Beef enchiladas – Blundells
Chicken enchiladas – Josh and Shalyn
Beef fajitas and guacamole – Smiley and Shari
(amazing) Apple cinnamon wraps with vanilla ice cream – Aaron and Keri
We were surprised we were able to get 13 people seated in our humble abode, but we did it and then played a game of Boxers or Briefs afterwards.
We also took two of our old digital cameras and set them out for everyone to snap random photos as they saw fit. One of them has a busted LCD screen on it – so it made for some fun interesting pics. You can see them all on my Flickr account.
A great time had by all I do believe. We’re ready to start planning our next monthly dinner club meeting for next month. Check your e-mail you might be invited. Spaces are limited – we’ll start drawing names from the hat again soon.
