Peace in the face of violence

At just 14 years old, a Talib fighter boarded a bus, pointed a pistol at Malala Yousafzai’s head and pulled the trigger. But she survived, made a full recovery in England, and has become and transformative figure in human rights.

She appeared on The Daily Show this week and when asked about being threatened by the Taliban, Yousafzai painted a powerful picture for peace:

I started thinking about that, and I used to think that the Talib would come, and he would just kill me. But then I said, ‘If he comes, what would you do Malala?’ then I would reply to myself, ‘Malala, just take a shoe and hit him.’ But then I said, ‘If you hit a Talib with your shoe, then there would be no difference between you and the Talib. You must not treat others with cruelty and that much harshly, you must fight others but through peace and through dialogue and through education.’ Then I said I will tell him how important education is and that ‘I even want education for your children as well.’ And I will tell him, ‘That’s what I want to tell you, now do what you want.’

Reza Aslan talks about the historical Jesus

A really interesting interview of Reza Aslan on The Daily Show:

I thought Jon Oliver’s comments were really insightful:

“I like this man. I liked the guy who was the day laborer, who was probably illiterate who was a radical nationalist. I like this guy. I like him a whole lot me than the bird statue. He means more to me. You can have a personal relationship with this man and I have to wonder what the hell he would feel about “touchdown Jesus.” I wonder if this guy would be like ‘What is that? It seems sacrilegious but it’s also it’s kind of great.'” – Jon Oliver

I wonder if in focusing so much on the divinity of God, we’ve lost the humanity that reaches out to so many people.

Adding Reza Aslan’s book to my Wish List.

Jon Stewart on the NRA Convention

So much to appreciate here…

  • Pointing out both sides use fear to promote their agenda — one of my BIGGEST complaints with our political system.
  • Showing the irony in calling the government the evil tyrant that we must protect ourselves from and then applauding the government for being the good guys.
  • Pointing out that there’s no way to always know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are — and if they’ll always stay that way.
  • And pointing out that if a good guy becomes a bad guy (as sometimes happens) in the NRA’s mindset, you’ve already given them a gun.

A co-worker pointed out last week that if the real reason we need guns is to protect us from the evil tyrant of a government – he wants an F-16. Because an AR-15 isn’t going to protect him from the largest military in the world.

I agree.

Seems we’re going to either really have to up our own personal weapons arsenal – or drastically downgrade the U.S. military.

Also – for some additional fun, The Daily Show came to Dallas this past week to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

The clincher line – “They do the jobs we don’t want to do, staying sober and staying politically engaged.”

McCain :: Nations don’t invade other nations

However, it is acceptable to invade another nation if…

  • The said leader has a funny looking mustache
  • The leader has a very tall statue of himself within the said nation
  • The residents of the said nation follow a false religion

The Daily Show on Mitt Romney

Apparently Mitt Romney loved America so much, he could not subject it to a Romney presidency and if he keeps running – we let the liberals, aka terrorists win.

Romeny also complains that Europe doesn’t have enough god. But the jihadists have too much god. America apparently has it all balanced.
