Trying some new theming

I’m playing with a few different site designs behind the scenes.

(Love me some WAMP server BTW).

I think I’ll keep things fairly basic and flat like the last few design iterations but I’m not sold on a color scheme yet.

What do you think?

Happy Birthday to my blog

Today in 1993 the first website went online. Also, today in 2005 I (officially) started blogging.

I started out on Blogger, moved to WordPress and now I manage four or five different blogs on a regular basis.

Surprisingly my first post was a little future telling:

So I gave in. I got myself a blog. I’ve been fighting this for some time, and I don’t really know why. Maybe it was because I hate fads — even though I love being on the cutting edge of everything. Is it just me or is that really ironic?
And despite what it may look like, this is actually my first posting on this blog. All the earlier entries are simply postings of my old columns that people seem to want to continue to read.
Anyways, I’ll start posting my weekly columns/random thoughts and maybe a podcast in the future.
I’m very intriguied by the whole podcast idea. If you haven’t heard anything about it, check out podcast.net to find a listing of what’s currently out there. I’m sure I’ll jump on that bandwagon as soon as I can find enough content to post a weekly show (sounds like my dream of writing a book). There’s so much I want to do — and so little time and content.
Well, so there you have it. I’m live in the blog world.
Peace!
-stranger in a strange land

Since then I have started a podcast (which has gone through it’s own changes) and written my first book.

As my time, schedules and interests evolve so does publishing online.

There’s no telling what the next eight years will be bring (or even 80) but I’m looking forward to it.

Thanks for joining me on the journey.

PS: I’ve had the privilege of being on Power Talk several times in the last few months. Always enjoy getting the opportunity.

This week we talked with Steve Knight and Phil Shepherd about issues facing the Church and how we can regain the trust of those outside the walls of the church.

Top 10 posts of 2010

As another year comes to an end, I must say, I’ve really enjoyed another year of blogging here and elsewhere.

Here’s a look back at the top 10 posts on my blog…

Ustream videos not working? Fixed! – Apparently I wasn’t the only one having this problem. Several sites linking to this post for their users hasn’t hurt it’s popularity either.

How I’m running a G1 on AT&T with Android 2.2 – One of the great advantages to the Android OS is it’s ability to be customized – just like upgrading the first Google phone to the (at the time) latest and greatest OS.

Texas foster care statistics for 2009 – Glad to see this one in the top 3. Hopefully it inspires action.

Caedmon’s Call Raising up the Dead – Initial Thoughts – A review of Caedmon’s Call latest release.

13 great starter apps for Android – Another tech post for fans of the Android OS.

Review: The Sovn Oxygen Pillow – This was a fun process of doing a review of something I knew very little about but was anxious to find out about.

11 Kingdom Bloggers to watch in 2010 – A list of recommended bloggers for 2011. Still stand by the list – a great group of bloggers.

Ways to give aid for Haitian relief – There’s still a need and still ways to help.

1 Timothy 5:8 – How do you read it? – Some thoughts on Mark Driscoll’s hard stance on men and women and working outside the home.

Jesus is a liberal Democrat and Stephen Colbert is a genius – Stephen Colbert at his best — reminding us that “either we’ve got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition — and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”

Looks like tech related posts continue to be my most read but I’m glad to see issues like foster care and helping others in Haiti take a prime spot in the top 10 as well.

Perhaps a tech blog should be in the future? Probably not – but still looking forward to seeing what 2011 will bring.

So what was your favorite blog post this year? On my blog or elsewhere?

A little change in direction?

I’m considering a slight name change for my blog…

From Stranger in a Strange Land to simply “Jonathan D. Blundell” – with Stranger in a Strange Land as the “tag” or “description”…

Can’t decide if it’s more or less confusing.

Thoughts?

Anniversary - Dallas Arboretum
Flowers at the Dallas Arboretum

Sorry my posts have lacked in originality as of late… getting moved and unpacked has taken up much of my focus and inspiration as of late.

The whole moving process reminds me that I still have a LOT of stuff — and a lot more decluttering needs to be done. It’s amazing to realize how our things can have such a tight grip on us.

I was talking with a friend last night about our homes and how they’ve changed over the last 50 years.

We were saying how amazing it is that our grandparents had homes half the size of ours (or maybe even smaller) and had plenty of room for their stuff and the entire family.

And if they were to put our sectional in their living room, it would fill up more than half the space. You’d be challenged to get from one room to the other.

So not only do we seem to have more stuff — but it’s gotten bigger to boot!

Yet we continue to pile more and more stuff on top of the things we already have.
