Dining with friends

It’s interesting how often food is mentioned in Scripture.

We see it parallel our spiritual lives in so many ways.

What goes in, must come out.
Man cannot live on bread alone…
Take and eat, this is my body…

Even the early Christians were known to partake in a “Love Feast” where everyone joined together and shared their meals and life together. I liken it to what Max Fincher calls, “The Gospel of Welcome.”

We also see that Jesus often ministered around food, whether it was feeding 5000 or meeting for dinner at a friends house, food seemed to be involved.

When you get together with your group/community/church…

Is food a part of your groups gathering?

Is the group coming together to share and partake of food together – or is it an “everybody for themselves” mentality?

Why do you think the early church referred to meal time as a “Love Feast?”

Does it make a difference?

It’s almost funny to me, but when we have a great food idea for the week, we almost always seem to have more people show up and participate in the meal and the rest of the evening.

I wonder if we’re missing out on something when we decide to overlook coming together for a meal. What if we’re missing something when we simply tell people “eat before you come” or “bring your own food – don’t worry about bringing extra to share.”
