Church-goers support torture

torture

A new CNN article today reports that the more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

Can someone please tell me why?

Is there something I’m missing along the way?

  1. I would be interested to see the actual questions used in this poll, how the poll was conducted, what population that was sampled and was the sample weighted in some way.

I have a hard time believing that result. I would also like to know how torture was defined in the survey.

Personally, I take anything that is reported by CNN with a huge grain of salt. I do not consider them to be a credible news organization.

    1. sorry, thought I included a link to the article.

the survey was done by the Pew Research Center.

      here’s the question:

“Do you think the use of torture against suspected terrorists in order to gain important information can often be justified, sometimes be justified, rarely be justified, or never be justified?”

      and the specific results:

      my question remains – why?

  3. Thanks for clarifying.

Yes, I am with you. I also ask why. I do not support torture either. I do support interrogations but not torture.

  5. In short, and I hope not too blunt, I am a Christian who believes that Terrorists are pure evil and evil in this context has to be dealt with. They have no regard for American lives and will stop at nothing to destroy our country. Also, in my opinion, we start walking a slippery slope when judging what actions in war are acceptable or not. I and many others may have it wrong but only God knows for sure and I pray for his guidance. Just my thoughts…
