Steve Jobs took a jab at Bill Gates and Microsoft this week at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
Mac OS X Leopard will be released in October and Jobs said Apple will offer a number of options for the new operating system, basic, business, enterprise and even ultimate – all for $129.

I’m actually starting to think more and more about trying out Ubantu, the Linux based OS – for free.

Star Wars Mashup
Brian Bailey’s son has put together several Star Wars Mashups with the site, mashup.starwars.com.
Pretty funny stuff. Good job Ben. Keep it up.
I’d still love to see a mashup with Josh Wink’s “Higher State of Consciousness” playing for the soundtrack.
Get a little R2D2 rapping going on. You know what I’m saying in full effect?
New Firefox under development
Firefox v.3 is available for testing now.
Code named Gran Paradiso Alpha 1 the new browser is expected to bring a number of improvements to my favorite browser:
- Cairo is now being used as the default graphics library, affecting all graphic and text rendering
- Cocoa Widgets are now used in OS X builds
- An updated threading model
- Changes to how DOM events are dispatched (see bug 234455)
- Changes to how object elements are loaded (see bug 1156)
- Changes to how web pages are painted
- New SVG elements and filters, and improved SVG specification compliance
I don’t recommend downloading the trial version unless you plan on doing a lot of programming with it – but it’s out there if you’re interested.
Creative public wi-fi
CNet writes about some creative solutions Smalltown, USA may need to take advantage of to bring public Wi-Fi to town.
…while thousands of towns are interested in developing municipal networks, few vendors are willing to take on small projects.
“I think towns are putting out RFPs faster than the industry can respond. I mean, there are several thousand cities pursuing this; there are only so many vendors pursuing smaller cities,” Mitch Gorsen, vice president at MultiState Associates, said in an interview…
EarthLink and AT&T in a panel at MuniWireless New England here on Tuesday said that population density is a factor when they consider taking on a project. As businesses, they want to see a return on their investment through things like subscription services or advertising revenue, depending on the business model.
So really, what’s a wiki?
Ok some of you are probably freaking out right now.
Wiki? Blog? E-mail? www?! What is going on?
Well hopefully you’ve figured the last three out by now. But you may be unfamiliar with Wiki’s, such as www.wikipedia.org. Sure you may understand it’s an online encyclopedia, but do you really understand how it works?
Would you know what’s going on if I sent you info on a Wiki to plan a camping trip?
The guys at Common Craft have put together a great “Wiki in Plain English” video to let you know what all the fuss is about.

I haven’t used any Wiki’s other than Wikipedia, but I’m considering using one for some new manuals and policies we’re going to put into place in our precinct. We’ll see how it goes.
Oh and here’s a few sites you can go to to get your own wiki:
Weekend changes
Well, as you may remember, my life and I were planning on going camping Friday night after attending the wedding of our friends Josh McDonald and Amy Wade.
I got to show off my new clothes. As you can see in the photo, I still have a habit of leaning or slouching down when I’m standing next to Laurie. I’m hoping I didn’t do that in our wedding photos. We’re still waiting to get those back.
While we were at the wedding reception in downtown Dallas at the Trammel Crow building, we received a call from Dollye saying, “There’s a tornado watch and a thunderstorm warning. They’re expecting 70 mile an hour winds and we don’t think our tent will hold up.” Needless to say, they began packing up to head home.
So we opted out of heading north and decided to head south and home afterwards. The storms hit around 1 a.m., about the time we were falling asleep.
With no other plans for the weekend we took it easy Saturday and visited our parents, went to an Army Supply store for some Geocaching goodies, ate an early dinner at El Fenix (Mmm) and picked up the Pres-i-nator from Laurie’s parents.
We came home and drove around the Waxahachie area before retiring for the night. We’re planning to hide several Geocaches in the area so we drove around to scout out a few ideas.
I decided to sleep in Sunday morning and not help the set-up crew at encounter since they weren’t expecting me. It was a nice change.
Sunday was another relaxing day as we (I really mean she) took care of some laundry and we visited Brian & Heather and other encounter folks for an anniversary shower at their house.
Now we just have to figure out a time we can go camping again before it gets too unbelievably hot, or too cold again.
