#justicefriday :: clean water wells

kevind

My friend Kevin Hendricks is raising money to build a fresh water well in Ethiopia.

After seeing the affects of poor drinking water when he adopted his son from Ethiopia he knew he had to do something. He’s seen poverty firsthand and now he’s making it personal.

Red Oak LLP :: insurgency of love

laundry love

We had our first Laundry Love Project in the Red Oak area tonight – specifically in Glenn Heights.

We had hoped and planned to do our first LLP in our neighborhood but we had some trouble communicating with the owner of the local laundry mat. So rather than force the issue we decided to do a surprise insurgency of love just a few miles north of us in Glenn Heights.

It was unannounced, non-advertised. We just showed up and offered to pay for people’s laundry as they walked in the door.

justice friday

Today is justice friday (#justicefriday) on the web…

What is it? It is a day that different people “tweet” about, blog about, facebook about, and generally raise awareness for all sorts of justice issues. From human trafficking to malaria, all sorts of justice issues are raised, with the end goal of generating awareness and action. The point is not just to share statistics, the point is to help other people understand the great justice issues of our day, and how they can respond and act to bring justice.

You can get involved in a couple of ways:

  1. Follow the action by searching the hashtag #justicefriday on Twitter – read the tweets. (Here’s how hashtags work…)
  2. Tweet, blog, update your Facebook status and also retweet (repost) stats, info, and facts about your favorite justice issues. Do you have a favorite organization like the IJM or Not For Sale or Compassion? Follow them on Twitter and retweet their info for the rest of us! There are lots of ways to get involved. Remember to use the #justicefriday hashtag.

What injustices are you passionate about? What would you like to see your friends and family and others become more aware of and involved in?

What other meme’s do you take part in throughout the week?
HT to exagorazo for the info.

A kick in the balls

Yup. There you have it. That’s what Saturday night felt like during our JustOne Dallas Launch Party.

Much of the evening was educating ourselves about JustOne and that included watching “Fields of Mudan” – a 23 minute kick in the balls.

Give the gift of clean, fresh water for 30 people

Kevin Hendricks is a man on a(nother) mission… after spending time in Ethiopia this March to pick up his newly adopted son Milo, he’s witnessed the water crises there first hand and he’s hoping to make a difference with his 30th birthday.

Kevin writes ::

In late March 2009 we traveled to Ethiopia to bring home our son Milo. While there, we witnessed the reality of unclean water:

  • Time and time again we saw the people of Ethiopia carrying these 5 gallon jerry cans, often walking hours to muddy water holes for their daily supply of tainted water.
  • Milo came home with giardia, a water-borne intestinal parasite common among people with no access to clean water.
  • I fell sick for a day, stricken down by water unintentionally consumed either in the shower or from rinsed dishes. Thankfully it was a mild case (yay for meds!).

Helping those in need – for FREE

homeless

I think its safe to say that we’d all like to be able to help a friend in need. It’s probably even safe to say that many of us would be willing to help a stranger if it didn’t take too much out of our own wallet or time or energy.

I personally wish I was less selfish myself and more giving — even when it stretches my wallet or time.

But perhaps we can all re-think a corporation’s generosity (aka marketing) to help those who are hurting and in need.

This week @sgalloway re-tweeted an idea that while many were jumping on Oprah’s FREE KFC coupon offer for themselves — perhaps the better idea would be to print out the coupons and give some free food to the homeless or others in need. (unfortunately you can no longer print off the coupons – but if you’ve printed the coupons off – they’re still good for a week or so.)

I had ignored the e-mails I had seen up until that point, but after seeing the idea, I quickly jumped on it and printed out my 4 coupons to buy a meal for someone else.

Today I saw another freebie from Sonic :: FREE CroisSONICâ„¢ Breakfast Sandwich with purchase of a large drink.

I’m not sure what the normal price of this CroisSonic is but I’d bet you’re saving $3-$4 with the coupon.

So you buy a drink for yourself and get a FREE breakfast sandwich to give to someone in need. Or better yet, spend a buck or two and get a sandwich and a drink for someone else in need.

I bet there are promotions like this popping up all over the place. Perhaps we can re-think these promotions and rather than scoring a great deal for ourselves – we can better help someone else in need.

What promotions have you seen recently? Anyone else put this into practice?
