The week in review 9/26/12 – 9/30/12

Catching up on some photos from this week.

Discovered my lens definitely doesn’t do macro very well (didn’t really expect it to). Tried getting some closeups of some coins – no luck.

Enjoyed seeing Derek Webb at the Prophet Bar in Deep Ellum. Left my camera in the car during the show – decided I’d rather sit and enjoy the show than worry about photos.

Grabbed a few shots near my car on the way out and really wished I had my tripod.

Friday the rains came and as of Sunday afternoon, we’re still getting sprinkles here and there.

And Sunday morning – I got a kick out of watching HDiddy’s feet tapping to the music of Shaun Groves.

G1 vs iPhone 3G: Comparing video

As I continue using my “new” iPhone, I thought it would be interesting to compare the video quality of my mobile phones… the G1 I used up until a week or so ago and the iPhone 3G I’ve been using since.

Granted, these aren’t the phones you’ll be buying in the stores anymore but if you’re looking for a re-furbished/used phone on ebay or elsewhere, this might help you make your decision. Last check showed an unlocked G1 for $75 on ebay or an 8GB iPhone 3G for $160.

These videos were recorded on the phones (I had to download a camcorder app for the iPhone) and uploaded straight to the web.

The video quality is comparable but the iPhone has the weird screen ratio. That may bother some – may not bother others.

Like my still photography, I still like having a dedicated device for video (at least until I get a phone with better video quality) but appreciate having video on my phone for spur of the moment things.

Do you use video on your phone or do you use a video specific device like the Flip UltraHD Cam?

digital analog camera

remember the days of analog cameras? you’d fill a full roll of film, never quite knowing how it would turn out – until you developed the film. sometimes you’d be thrilled, sometimes sadly disappointed.

but what if you could return to those anxious days without the cost of film developing? that’s the idea behind the Eazzzy! cam design. no lcd screen, no viewfinder, but also no waiting for film to develop. just plug it into your usb port and go.

another option that i’ve had fun with is basically the same idea – just continuing to use a digital camera with a broken lcd screen.
we’ve set it out at a few parties and gotten funny looks but the pictures are some of the more random fun photos of the night.
you could do the same thing i spose by taping over the screen and viewfinder as well.

How do you get creative with your phonecam?

Have you bought a camera phone and still don’t know what it’s good for?
Check out some of these ideas:

  • Remember where you parked – In a parking lot or garage, snap a photo of the section where you’ve parked. If you’re parked on the street in a strange neighborhood, grab a picture of an address, a landmark, or of the signs for the cross street.
  • “Wishlist” items you might want to buy later – If you’re out and about and happen to see a CD, book, or other consumable you might want to pick up later on, snap a photo of the item’s barcode. When you get home you can look the item up on Amazon or Froogle.com and find the best price, or just add it to your canonical online wishlist.
  • Show people where you’ve put things – If you’ve moved the mayonnaise jar with little Tyler’s college money or relocated the good scissors to your work bench, snap a photo and mail it to your housemates.

What do you use your phone for?

UPDATE (4/17/12): Or you could just take photos and share them over the Interwebs… 🙂
