Morning Cup of Links

Web design

Flat UI and forms – It’s easy to forget about forms when working on new designs. Even though they’re usually mentioned at the beginning of the project, they’ve often come us as a last minute request. After everything is said and done someone says, “Hey we need a contact form.”

The problem is that in the push for simplicity, flat UIs may have gone too far. With content, things like drop shadows, gradients, and borders may well be no more than useless “embellishments.” When we read a multi-page news article, it doesn’t matter much whether the mechanism to move to the next page is a button or a link. With forms, however, distinguishing between a button and a link matters far more.

Gadgets/Tech

Fitbit Force review – I personally have the Jawbone Up and really like it – but this Fitbit Force might be my next purchase in personal fitness tracking. Only thing that seems to be missing is the slow-wake alarm that Jawbone offers – but seems to be a hit or miss for me depending on how much sleep I actually get that night.

Lifehack

Is it easier to stream legally or illegally? – I think it’s becoming more obvious that more and more people are wanting to stream content directly to their TVs or mobile devices, however I’ve often found that the content I want isn’t available ANYWHERE legally – or it falls into crazy DRM restrictions that block me from displaying it on my TV from my mobile devices. Not that I condone the behavior but it doesn’t surprise me at all that so many people stream content illegally.

Happy birthday to the two most amazing boys in the world!

The last few months have sent us all in a bit of a tailspin but I wouldn’t trade it or either of you (or your sister) for anything.

You are both so amazing. So unique. So caring. So inquisitive. So full of life and energy.

I am so very proud if both of you and can’t wait to see all the amazing things you will do in the years to come.

I love you both so much.

Cure for the common bedtime tummy ache

I probably won’t get this published in the next medical journal – but I have found a cure for the common bedtime tummy ache many toddlers get.

Step 1 – roll onto your side
Step 2 – curl your legs up as close to your belly as possible
Step 3 – squeeze your blanket
Step 4 – close your eyes and stay as still as possible

So far my medical tests show that the tummy ache goes away within five minutes or less 98% of the time.

The other 2% you better hope you have a bucket or towel nearby.

The missing message in today’s church

William Graham Tullian Tchividjian writes:

America’s churches came back into the media limelight a few weeks ago after a well-publicized Pew study showed a meteoric rise of Americans claiming no religious affiliation, shooting up from seven percent in 1990 to 16 percent in 2010. The percentage more than doubled for those under the age of 30, reaching almost 35 percent. The group is now being referred to as “the religious nones.”

He points to a great article by Rachel Held Evans that what millennials really want from church is a change in substance.

He continues:

As someone who loves the church, I am saddened by the perception of Christianity as a vehicle of moral control and good behavior, rather than a haven for the discouraged and dying. It is high time for the church to remind our broken and burned out world that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a one-way declaration that because Jesus was strong for you, you’re free to be weak; because Jesus won for you, you’re free to lose; because Jesus succeeded for you, you’re free to fail.

Grace and rest and absolution – with no new strings or anxieties attached–now that would be a change in substance.

How freeing would that be for you to receive today?

And do you agree – is this message missing from today’s churches?
