Adventures with IDiddy

Now that it’s a bit warmer and the boys are a bit older, we’re trying to get them out of the house more for one-on-one adventures with mommy or daddy.

It may be a trip to Costco, it may be visiting their grandparents or it may be treasure hunting (aka geocaching).

This morning was IDiddys time for adventure, so we enjoyed some donuts, playing at the park, hiding a treasure and hunting a few around town.

It’s amazing to see how much they’ve grown in just a year and all that they can accomplish at just 3.5 years old.

Time is already going fast. I better get a lot more adventures planned before they’re too cool and move on without me.

Lessons in HDiddy-isms

HDiddy came in my office this morning asking to watch something about a horsey with a nose.
I finally figured out what he was talking about when he looked on my shelf and pointed to the DVDs saying, “DADDY! There’s the horsey with a red nose. I see it!”
He wanted to watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

Colbert takes on Fight Church

Stephen Colbert, host of the Colbert Report and soon to be host of the Late Show on CBS, took on the new documentary Fight Church last night.

I haven’t seen the documentary yet but it focuses on a church that uses Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to attract people to the church.

I’ll admit that as someone who was actively a part of the Christian Wrestling Federation (as a ring announcer – not wrestler) for several years I’m still a bit torn by this idea of a MMA church.

I understand where they’re coming from – but as I’ve evolved in my own understanding of Scripture and my faith, I have a hard time justifying anyone, Christian or not, attacking someone else.

The whole idea really seems to be a natural evolution of a church trying to be relevant to the culture with groups like the Power Team that we grew up with in the 80s and 90s – strong men coming in and ripping phone books and baseball bats in half in the name of Jesus.

In fact, we did a CWF show once with a former member of the Power Team who made the point that we were doing the same thing they had done from years – only we were “beating up people instead of phone books and cinder blocks.”

But in my mind, people are far more interested in someone authentically caring about them than someone who’s able to put on a good show to attract them. Gimmicks will draw anyone in for a one-night stand – but authenticity and love will change someone’s life.

I still revert back to what Roman Emperor Julian said about 4th century Christians:

These impious Galileans not only feed their own poor, but ours also; welcoming them into their agape, they attract them, as children are attracted, with cakes… Whilst the pagan priests neglect the poor, the hated Galileans devote themselves to works of charity and by a display of false compassion have established and given effect to their pernicious errors. See their love-feasts and their tables spread for the indigent. Such practice is common among them and causes a contempt for our gods.

What do you think?

Happy Earth/ Creation Day

The way you treat the creation reflects how you feel about the creator.

I refer back to this quote a lot.

Usually in how we treat one another (as in it’s original context) but I think it also goes right along with Creation care as well.

Growing up I remember making jokes about Treehuggers and thinking they were all a bunch of liberal bleeding heart crazies.

But a big change happened when I started to see “Environmentalism” as Creation care. It’s not just a liberal cause that’s tied to a political agenda. It’s actually more about our call to be good stewards of what we’ve been given.

If you’re on the fence about Creation care, I’d encourage you to listen to a couple interviews I did on the something beautiful podcast.

One with Jonathan Merritt and the other with Ragan Sutterfield.

And for grins, enjoy this NSFW animation from Luis C.K.

The jury is still out on my Gunnar glasses

I purchased a pair of Crystaline Gunnar glasses last month to help ease some of the eye strain I experience during the day.
The glasses are meant to filter out UV and other blue lights from computer monitors that can add to eye strain.
I haven’t worn them religiously but a month in I’m not convinced they make a huge difference at the end of the day.
At the end of the day it seems I have better luck if I get a good night’s sleep the night before.
