Lady Bird Johnson dead at 94

Claudia Alta Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson, former US First Lady from Texas died today at the age of 94.
She was an alum of the University of Texas and married Lyndon Baines Johnson on November 17, 1934, at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas.
She spent years working towards ending poverty, beautifying Texas and US Highways and served as a great ambassador for the state.

Here’s an interesting bit of trivia I read about LBJ and LBj–they met in September, 1934, he proposed on their first date and told her in November that if they didn’t get married then, they never would. He and his assistants arranged everything and one even ran out right before the ceremony to buy her wedding ring at Sears. The cost? It had chip diamonds and cost $2.50! So much for a long engagement and saving up for the big stone! The Episcopal priest who married them doubted that it would last–I guess he was wrong!
