Trying out new Moves

moves-iphone

Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I really dig my Jawbone Up.

It’s discrete, it offers great insight at the end of the day and has a great sleep monitor & wake feature. I love that it’s waterproof and I can leave it on 24/7 without any issues. And I love that the battery lasts approximately 10 days. The only device I have that lasts that long these days is my Kindle.

However, the one downside is it doesn’t always track my steps correctly if I’m not walking with my hands free.

If I spend an hour walking through Costco pushing a shopping cart – it won’t track a thing. If I walk with my hands in my pocket, it won’t track a thing. If I walk around the neighborhood holding my boys’ hands – it won’t track much of anything.

So with that in mind (and that I’m always looking for the next big thing) I’m giving Moves a try.

I’ve always been leery of pedometers on my phone simply because of how they tend to hurt your battery life. But Moves developers say in general the app won’t affect your battery life – so we’ll see.

Looking forward to comparing it with my Jawbone and see how the two match/don’t match up at the end of the day.

And of course this also means either no tracking at night or I have to keep my phone closer to my side when I walk in the door #facepalm.

I feel like the early days of smart phones when I had a dream list and no one could meet it all.

So if you’re a developer – here’s my current body tracking wish list:

  • Tracks heart rate
  • Tracks steps/movement
  • Doesn’t without relying on my arm movement
  • Wearable 24/7
  • Waterproof
  • Durable
  • Syncs with iOS/Android
  • Includes desktop integration for more detailed reporting
  • Long battery life
  • Syncs with other apps like MyFitness Pal to give you a better picture of calorie intake/burned

What would you add? Have you found a device you love that fits your dream list?

WordPress for iOS wish list

Something I’d love to see the WordPress iOS app do…
Allow uploading full size versions of a photo but only display the chosen size.
As it is I either upload and display a photo in the original size or as a smaller version.

What would you like to see improved?

App idea

An idea for an smartphone app (or super mobile friendly website):

I would love to have an app that let’s you search by dietary restrictions and then tells you what you can get at nearby restaurants.

For example if I wanted Atkins diet I could search my local area and see all the food choices that are Atkins friendly.

If I wanted to search for vegetarian it would show all the possible meal choices that are vegetarian.

And an ultimate feature would be to combine diets for groups or family members.

So if I need a gluten free meal and my wife wanted low sodium we could have an instant list of where we might be able to get both.

Something new for something beautiful

something beautiful

We’re trying something new over at the something beautiful podcast.

Yes, it is indeed an experiment in podcasting.

We’re trying a new shorter and concise format with the podcast, with a goal of keeping each episode between five to 10 minutes max.

Along with the shorter episodes, we’re changing up the style and the focus of each podcast.

Rather than drilling down into a guest’s entire story – we’re shifting our focus to what inspires them.

Our first guest is Kevin Hendricks – a good friend of the podcast and the author of several books, including his latest, 137 Books in One Year.

Whether your a long time listener of the podcast or you’ve never even visited the site, I hope you’ll take a few minutes and give the new format a listen and let us know what you think.

Embedded Tweets in WordPress 3.4

With the new latest version of WordPress you can now easily embed Tweets into your blog posts.

Previously this could be done – but only with a plugin. I’m actually pretty excited about this feature. I may use it only on rare occasions – but it’ll be super handy when I do.
