Harlem Children's Zone

I’m amazed by this week’s This American Life (as always).

In Act 1, they tell the story of Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem Children’s Zone.

From the show…

Paul Tough reports on the Harlem Children’s Zone, and its CEO and president, Geoffrey Canada. Among the project’s many facets is Baby College, an 8-week program where young parents and parents-to-be learn how to help their children get the education they need to be successful. Tough’s just-published book about Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem’s Children Zone is called Whatever It Takes.

After he started raising his second son and saw all the science showing the best practices for raising and developing a child in their early years, Geoffrey decided to go big and make a huge impact on the streets of Harlem. The Idea Camp – Justice edition

Idea Camp Logo

Have I mentioned that I love the ideas behind The Idea Camp? It’s such a great un-conference, open and FREE (aka Pay What You Will) concept!

The event is based entirely around conversations with the “speakers” via interviews, Twitter and txt messaged questions, rather than a 45-minute lecture by some “expert” in his field.

The Killers and MTV unite against Human Trafficking

From MTV:

The Killers have joined forces with MTV to stamp out human trafficking.
Produced in partnership with UNICEF, USAID and MTV Exit – MTV’s campaign to raise awareness and increase prevention of human trafficking and exploitation – the band have made a powerful video for their track Goodnight, Travel Well, highlighting the dangers of trafficking and the sexual exploitation of young women.

“We are deeply shocked and appalled that women and children are forced into such exploitative situations,” said The Killers, announcing the collaboration. “We hope that through MTV’s efforts and this powerful video that millions of people across the world learn about this tragic form of modern-day slavery”.

I applaud The Killers and MTV for putting together this video to raise awareness.

Now if only they’d stop airing and promoting a lifestyle that at the same time promotes this treatment of women as well.
