{"id":2810,"date":"2007-08-23T07:58:09","date_gmt":"2007-08-23T13:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.casadeblundell.com\/jonathan\/?p=2810"},"modified":"2007-08-23T07:58:57","modified_gmt":"2007-08-23T13:58:57","slug":"the-power-of-wikipedia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/casadeblundell.com\/jonathan\/the-power-of-wikipedia\/","title":{"rendered":"The power of Wikipedia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To quote <a href=\"http:\/\/dailyfunnel.blogspot.com\/\">Eric Lidji<\/a> (speaking of &#8211; that guy needs to start blogging again) again, &#8220;Ah the blogosphere, the place of no accountability.&#8221;<br \/>\nSome might suggest we could apply that same quote to Wikipedia &#8211; although I&#8217;ve found that there are a NUMBER of folks out there who are Wikipedia <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/User_talk:Jdblundell\">sticklers for content, sources and edits<\/a> (which while I may disagree with them at times &#8211; is a good thing).<br \/>\nBut <strong>Virgil Griffith<\/strong> wanted to find out just how reliable the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit really was.<br \/>\nHe created software that examined Wikipedia entries and the source of their edits, and found some interesting things.<br \/>\nFor example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<LI> Microsoft tried to cover up the XBOX 360 failure rate<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> In the 9\/11 Wikipedia article, the NRA added that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Iraq was involved in 9\/11\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Exxon Mobil edits spillages and eco-system destruction from oil spillages article<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Scientology removes criticism and negatives article from Scientology page<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Dog breeding association deletes whole paragraphs about fatal attacks by dogs on humans<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Fox News removes all controversial topics against the network from the Fox News page<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Walmart removes criticism of outsourcing work. The retailer also changes negative paragraphs of underpaid workforce<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Someone at Reuters calls Bush \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a mass murderer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> Coca Cola removes negative content about its effects<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI> US University adds the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153prestigious\u00e2\u20ac\u009d adjective to its page<\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\nIt just goes to remind us that we&#8217;ve always got to <a href=\"http:\/\/themmergentdyslexic.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/do-you-like-your-pastor-if-not-blog.html\">examine and consider the source<\/a> of the information we get online, on TV, in print or anywhere else.
