Independent canidate for governor Kinky Friedman was in DeSoto today as a keynote speaker for a chamber of commerce event.
\nDuring his keynote address at the luncheon, the one-liners remained but Friedman has developed his message on several points since he began his campaign for governor last year.
\nReferring to a photograph of himself drinking a Guinness beer, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the drink that kept the Irish from taking over the world,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d while riding in a St. Patrick\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day Parade in Dallas, Friedman said he \u00e2\u20ac\u0153did drink the Guinness but I did not swallow.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nOn his age, Friedman said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m too young for Medicare and too old for women to care.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nOn immigration, Friedman asks, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153who would Jesus deport?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nOn gay marriages, the 61-year old bachelor says he supports the issue, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I want them to be as miserable as the rest of us.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nOn school prayer and the 10 commandments, Friedman said students should be allowed to believe in something and he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hate to see the 10 commandments after the Legislature gets a hold of them.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nOn the Internet, Friedman said \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use the internet — I think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the work of Satan.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nFriedman said politics as usual and his love for Texas brought him into the campaign.
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m the only candidate running that has no political experience whatsoever,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Friedman said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But I love Texas. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like the Republicans, I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like the Democrats, I love Texas and I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s happening to it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nFriedman pointed out that Gov. Rick Perry, independent candidate Carole Strayhorn and Democratic candidate Chris Bell have 89 years of politics between them.
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153That is exactly what the founding fathers did not want America to become,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Friedman said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think its time we have non-politicians as governor. Look at what the current governor has done. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decided not to have tolls on new toll roads until December. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got 1,500 troops on the border and we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve just been informed that they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got weapons with no ammunition. Not even like Barney Fife with one bullet. Of course as long as the Mexicans don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know this I guess we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be OK. They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re there for show.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
