{"id":152,"date":"2005-06-17T21:45:40","date_gmt":"2005-06-18T03:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.casadeblundell.com\/jonathan\/?p=152"},"modified":"2010-04-03T17:13:02","modified_gmt":"2010-04-03T22:13:02","slug":"federal-anti-municipal-wi-fi-bill-introduced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/casadeblundell.com\/jonathan\/federal-anti-municipal-wi-fi-bill-introduced\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal Anti-Municipal Wi-Fi Bill Introduced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mobile Pipeline reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Texas Congressman has introduced a bill that impose a nationwide prohibition on municipally-sponsored networks.<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed by the author, Representative Pete Sessions (R-Texas), the Preserving Innovation in Telecom Act of 2005, the bill prohibits state and local governments from providing any telecommunications or information service that is &#8216;substantially similar&#8217; to services provided by private companies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can&#8217;t believe someone would be concerned about people being able to access the internet&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Until you discover that Pete Sessions is also a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/politicians\/contrib.asp?CID=N00005681&#038;cycle=2004\">pimp<\/A>&#8221; for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbc.com\">Southwestern Bell<\/A>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to Sessions&#8217; on-line biography, he is a former employee of Southwestern Bell and Bell Labs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why does corporate America get to chose what legislation comes down the pipeline?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know where the rest of Congress stands &#8211; but it will make for an interesting article in this weeks Belton Journal I&#8217;m sure.<\/p>\n<p>We just started a number of free hotspots around town, with leadership from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seebelton.com\">Chamber of Commerce<\/A> and help from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bisd.net\">school district<\/A> and <A href=\"http:\/\/www.umhb.edu\">UMHB<\/A>.<\/p>\n<p>The school district has even talked about offering Wi-Fi internet access across the district to every student, so they can get internet access in their homes, whether they can afford it or not.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s stopping SBC and other companies from doing the same thing. If they want people to use their service &#8211; make a better deal of it.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I have to pay $30 + a phone line I never use to use SBC DSL. It wasn&#8217;t worth it &#8211; I shut it down. <\/p>\n<p>Now I use my network at work, or use local hotspots for internet access.
