\nAmerica is still on top
\nthere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s political confusion, social illusion
\nbut its no worse than most folks have got<\/p>\n
we read in the papers about the dealers and the rapers
\nand the wars that are being fought
\nwe see those who are needy
\ngive thanks to the banks that are not<\/p>\n
workin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 the 9 to 5
\nso we can afford our pretty white homes
\nand if we run out of money buying stuff we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need
\nwe can always just apply for a loan<\/p>\n
we live in the suburbs with our aunts and our mothers
\nand our pagers and our cellular phones
\nand our email, world wide web
\nso we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re never alone<\/p>\n
we give and we give to ourselves
\nbut still we need more
\nwe drink and we drink to our health
\npass out on the floor
\nthere is something very wrong with this nation
\nthat we all gladly ignore
\nrather be ignorant and complacent
\nthan pack our bags and walk out the door<\/p>\n
each Sunday the choir fills the churches with such beautiful sounds
\nthen the music trails off
\nand its back to the noise
\nof traffic and the smell of downtown<\/p>\n
we pass by the whores, the gays, the drunks in the doorways
\nand we try to keep our eyes on the ground
\nwe snicker at the lost and think,
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153man, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m so glad that I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m found\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
we give and we give to ourselves
\nbut still we need more
\nwe drink, yeah, we drink to our health
